Former Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien has asked the Chelsea board to secure Eden Hazard to a long-term contract, given the Real Madrid interest.
The 26 year old Belgian has been a vital part of Chelsea’s team since his arrival at the club from LOSC Lille in 2012. However, while he has suffered from form issues over the last few seasons, this season has seen Eden Hazard return back to his 2014/15 player of season form, with eight goals and six assists despite missing the start of the season. But former Blues and Real Madrid midfielder Micheal Essien has asked the club to secure their superstar.
The 35-year-old midfielder who made 256 appearances for the Blues winning two Premier League titles, one Champions League trophy and three FA Cups has said that even interest from Real Madrid is enough to unsettle a player. But the lure from Los Blancos is far too much and Essien hopes that Eden Hazard does decide to re-sign with the Stamford Bridge outfit.
In an interview with Goal, Essien said “He could go to Real Madrid to win the Balon d’Or easier. When we talk about Eden, he is such a good player. He’s very quick, very good on the ball. He’s very strong, he may be little but he is strong, trust me! It is hard to get the ball off him.
He’s such a good player and we’re happy to have him at Chelsea but I’d understand why Madrid would be looking at him. He is proving it week-in, week out. At the moment he is the most important player [at Chelsea]. When you have Hazard, he can always do something.”
Both Essien and Hazard played together between 2012 when the 26-year-old arrived from LOSC Lille until January of 2014 when Essien left the Blues for AC Milan as a free transfer. Thus while they spent a comparatively short amount of time together, the Ghana international did get to know Hazard and the way he played football.

Essien further added “He can always create something to do something with the ball. He makes goals for himself or others. He has that magic touch. I think that Chelsea need to renew his contract. You don’t want your best players to leave and we need him at the club.
“I think he is only motivated about playing football, he just enjoys playing football. It would take a lot of money to replace him [at Chelsea] but I hope that they can tie him down for a long time.”
There is no question about it, Chelsea need to tie down Eden Hazard to a brand new contract, especially with Real Madrid seriously looking for Cristiano Ronaldo’s replacement. However, given how much the Belgium international idolizes Zinedine Zidane, things may get a little complicated for the Blues.
