David Luiz is looking for a move to the Camp Nou to escape his current conundrum at Stamford Bridge.
Antonio Conte stirred up another controversy by benching David Luiz for the game against Manchester United. Chelsea ran out the winners thanks to a solitary goal from Alvaro Morata. Despite such a significant result, Luiz became the biggest talking point after the showdown at the Bridge. Conte counted the 30-year-old among the best ball-playing centre-halves in April. Their relationship has strayed a long way off course since then.

The Brazilian is no longer a guaranteed starter. Spanish outlet Diario Gol claims that David Luiz would prefer a move to Barcelona as soon as possible. He also believes that he’ll have a greater chance of winning the Champions League with Barcelona than with the Blues. Sources close to the player told Diario Gol “It’s better to be in Barcelona than to be a substitute in London.”
How did the situation come to be and chances of reconciliation between Conte and David Luiz
It all began after the mauling Chelsea suffered at the hands of Roma. After a 3-0 loss at Stadio Olimpico, Luiz questioned his manager’s tactics. This incident reportedly left Conte furious. Subsequently, the Italian benched David Luiz against Manchester United. This row has led to Luiz seeking pastures anew for next season.
Both Luiz and Conte are headstrong personalities. It is highly unlikely that Luiz will have a way back into the first eleven, especially after solid performances from Andres Christensen, his replacement on the weekend. Luiz is a huge figure in the Chelsea dressing room, Conte will need to handle this situation with utmost care and respect to maintain harmony at the club.
A lot of good players want to play for Barcelona. The question remains do Barcelona actually want him? They are short on defenders and there are reports that both Vermaelen and Mascherano will be leaving Camp Nou come the end of the season.
Luiz has been in constant contact with his compatriot Neymar. Despite leaving Barca for PSG this summer, Neymar continues to speak highly of the Catalan giants. This has Luiz sold on the idea of a move to Camp Nou.
Barcelona already have a long list of defensive targets with Luiz’s name not even popping up once. He will fit in seamlessly should the move go through. On the other hand, buying a 30-year-old defender who is not quite renowned for his defensive abilities will not be a good move on Barcelona’s part. They should rather buy someone like Matthijs De Ligt or Dayot Upamecano who will serve the club for years to come.
