Southampton’s centre-back Virgil van Dijk has been added by another of Europe’s Premier Clubs for the winter transfer. FC Barcelona is ready to enter the race and sign the centre-back after scouting him for many months, as reported by The Sun.
The Dutchman was scouted by many clubs after he announced that he is not willing to stay for another season at Southampton. Since then van Dijk has been the primary target for the Jurgen Klopp’s side. Klopp wanted to sign the saints defender, but for some reasons, the deal couldn’t materialize.
Virgil van Dijk has been edging for a move to leave his current club Southampton this summer. He tried to orchestrate a move to Anfield in this summer but stayed on the South Coast in the end as Klopp was unable to sign him. Now, Liverpool is to face stiff competition from FC Barcelona in signing the Dutchman as reported by The Mirror.
According to reports of The Sun, Catalan Giants sent their scouts to watch van Dijk in action against Holland vs Sweden game. Barcelona is currently searching for long-term replacements of Gerard Pique and Javier Mascherano. Till date, they have succeeded in signing Samuel Umtiti and a youngster from Brazil, Marlon Santos. They would definitely want to sign van Dijk in order to strengthen their defence.

It has also been reported that the Saints would like to send their player abroad than rather allowing them to move to Anfield. Other than FC Barcelona and Liverpool, Manchester City are also scouting this star defender and keeping themselves updated of the situation.
van Dijk’s views
van Dijk has recently returned to St Mary’s after he tried to force through a move to Liverpool this summer. The deal also failed and the Reds were forced to apologize for their behaviour. The Center-back was left training with the youth academy after he refused to play for the club.
“I have no regrets“, said van Dijk to Fox Sports in a recent interview.
‘Halfway through the season, maybe we can see what is possible.
‘I’m glad, I’m fit again and I can give up to 100 percent.
‘Of course, I wanted to make a step up but Southampton did not want to sell me.
‘But you’re professional, so now I’ll give everything to my current club.
Southampton would definitely want to sell Virgil van Dijk this winter as his contract runs out next summer. So van Dijk would be a free agent next summer and can sign for any desired club for free. Therefore Southampton would want to make some money from his transfer than letting him go for free.
If he signs for FC Barcelona, then he would definitely provide the defensive strength Barcelona has been missing for some years. In this winter Transfer window, it is expected that all of the managers Ernesto Valverde, Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp would want to sign him.
