FC Barcelona has been active in their pursuit of Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann for a while now. However, the Catalan giants have failed to find any breakthrough in the past. Now, the Camp Boy side are plotting a move for the Frenchman in the summer of 2018.
Barcelona believes they have the upper hand in the pursuit of Griezmann when compared to Manchester United. The Red Devils are also looking to bring the exciting forward to the Premier League.
Griezmann has hinted at his interest in a move to United in the past, as well as stating his interest in PSG’s project.

Barcelona plotting cheaper deal in the summer
Most fans and pundits agree on the fact that Griezmann was certainly going to be a United player in the summer. However, Atletico’s transfer ban meant that the Frenchman’s loyalty rested with Los Rojiblancos. The Frenchman continues to dazzle the Atletico fans, now at the new Wanda Metropolitano, where Griezmann has been in great form so far.
Now Barcelona, who are top of the table in La Liga, are looking to take advantage of a loophole in Griezmann’s contract. The Frenchman’s current price of £89m runs until the summer of 2018. This means that there is still a very real possibility of the former Real Sociedad attacker moving to another club.
Ever since Neymar’s transfer to Paris, the Catalan giants have been on the lookout for a proper replacement. Ousmane Dembele has shown good early promise, however, Griezmann brings a finished product with his style of play. A trio of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Griezmann would terrify even the best of defenses in the world.
Griezmann’s release clause will double until 2019
The Neymar transfer has brought a lot of money for Barcelona to reinvest in the squad. The arrivals of Gerard Deulofeu and Paulinho have added some depth to Ernesto Valverde’s squad, however, they still seem like they lack something in attack. Which explains their interest in signing Griezmann.
If they do not act quickly, the Frenchman could cost Barcelona a lot more than what he would next summer. Assuming that no transfer is made involving Griezmann, he would end up costing double the amount he does now. Which means that his price would go up to £178m after the 1st of July, this is due to a clause in his current contract.

Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo has reported about Griezmann’s contract situation. It also confirms that the Frenchman would cost a fortune if either United or Barcelona fail to act on their interest before 1st July.
Given the existence of this clause, it’s in Atletico’s best interest to keep Griezmann. Manchester United and Barcelona would engage in a transfer battle if necessary to prove just how much they need the talented attacker. It would make sense for him to move to United, given that his close friend Paul Pogba is a star at the club. Additionally, the presence of a large number of French players in the Premier League is also another positive for him. If he wishes to stay in Spain, Barcelona is probably the best destination for him.
