Kohli raised a lot of eyebrows by dropping India vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane from the team. The reason is revealed here.
The most awaited overseas series of India has started. There were surprises even before the start of the match. At toss time, Virat broke the news that Hardik Pandya and debutant Jasprit Bumrah were in the XI.
This meant that two stalwarts in Ishant Sharma and vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane had to sit out. No one would have predicted that Rahane would not play the first Test given his overseas record.
In the last test match Rahane played in South Africa, he scored two half centuries. In the second innings he fell short of a hundred by just four runs.
The main reason Ajinkya Rahane is not playing in this match is that Kohli believes in current form of his players rather than history. He included Jasprit Bumrah because of his brilliant recent performances in the limited overs.
Rahane has not been in the thick of things recently. His poor form is the catalyst to him sitting out. On the other hand, Rohit Sharma is in the side because of his stellar knocks in December 2017.
He has stunned one and all on Indian pitches and the bounce in South Africa will come to his aid as well. Now that India are tottering at 28-3, he has to take India forward along with Pujara and ensure they get to atleast 400.
Rahane has hit a rough patch in his career. He is probably the best in the Indian team when it comes to overseas batting. Rahane will be eager to pounce on any of the opportunities that he gets in the future.
It will not take much from Rahane to re-cement his place in the team.
