Matteo Darmian makes bold claim about David de Gea

Darmian plays along Buffon in Italy, but still rates de Gea over the veteran shot-stopper

Manchester United defender Matteo Darmian has revealed that he rates David De Gea as world’s best goalkeeper, ahead of his international teammate Gianluigi Buffon.

De Gea has picked up where he left off last season, keeping seven clean sheets so far and pulling off a string of impressive saves and his heroics have vindicated United’s refusal to sell him to Real Madrid despite considering interest.

De Gea has 7 clean sheets in 8 league matches

BEST IN THE WORLD

The 26-year-old has kept more than 100 clean sheets for United but individual recognition has been slightly harder to come by in Europe, given stiff competition from both Buffon and Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer.

The Italian defender who has been with the Spaniard for more than three years insisted while speaking to Manchester United’s official website, “I know David very well and I think, at this moment, he is the best goalkeeper in the world,”

“He is very important for us and I think that save at Stoke (from Jese Rodriguez) was incredible.”

Buffon has been the best goalkeeper for nearly two decades

BEST OF ALL TIME

Italy and Juventus legend Gianluigi Buffon has been among the best in his position for two decades. Darmian says that 39-year-old Buffon is the greatest goalkeeper of all time, but the versatile full-back feels that De Gea is currently in the best form.

“I think Gianluigi is the best goalkeeper of all time. He’s also a good guy. So I am lucky to play with two goalkeepers like this.

“Of course, it’s close (between the two). I don’t know. I think David is the best goalkeeper in the world and Gianluigi is the best goalkeeper of all time.

“I think they are similar because they are very strong and they make very good saves. They also have good personalities.”

AUTHOR’S TAKE

While Darmian concedes that Buffon is the greatest goalkeeper of all time, he concluded his analysis that it is impossible to ignore the achievements of David De Gea who now more than a 100 clean sheets for United. The Spanish goalkeeper is the first Red to achieve player of the season consecutively three times. Buffon is nearing his retirement and de Gea in such a splendid form which means he will surely be a legend at Old Trafford and be among the best in the world.
