A new void in Netherlands team

This Tuesday, Netherlands won their match against Sweden but could not qualify for the FIFA World Cup 2018. Furthermore, the captain, Arjen Robben announced his retirement from international matches after the match.

INTERNATIONAL CAREER

Robben had an incredible international career. Playing for about 14 years he has certainly boost up his team. The 33 years old, Dutch captain has made 96 appearances so far and holds a record of 37 goals. The best performance was displayed in pushing his team and becoming the runner-ups in FIFA World Cup 2010 and also finishing at third place in FIFA World Cup 2014.

THE LAST GAME

Robben really played his last game for the Netherlands to its fullest. Robben scored two goals for his team making the score 2-0 for the day. He got his first by a penalty he got the handball of Victor Lindelof. The second came just before the halftime, a fantastic shot within 25 yards. Although getting two in the first half only the team could not get the score any farther. However, the win could not the Dutch a place in the upcoming World Cup, Russia 2018.

Holland is on with the same tally of 19 points as that of Sweden lost in the race of goals. The last game was not meant for a simple win but had a challenge of scoring 7-0 for Netherlands to attain a playoff position. Furthermore, the 33 years old, Bayern Munich winger announced his retirement from his International career.

 NEW PLANS

After the match, Robben addressed, “I want to focus on my club [career] now. It’s a good time to pass the torch to the next generation. I wanted to show you what I can do. That has been done; I was well in the game. That’s how I am, as I’ve always tried to show with the Dutch team.”

He added, “I’ve been thinking about it for a long time. I’m very proud and honored at my six final tournaments. The most beautiful moments to me are the 2010 and 2014 World Championships, in which we were really a close team and a close group. But there are many beautiful moments, fourteen years is a long time.”

Although, Robben has now quit his international career he has passed his will to fight to the younger generation. Netherlands now have a new challenge of finding a dependable winger for their side. Moreover, football fans will certainly miss his presence in the upcoming World Cup along with some of the stars like Alexis Sanchez, Gareth Bale and Jan Oblak who did not qualified for the tournament.
