N’Golo Kante has revealed why he excelled in a new midfield role in the Champions League away fixture against Atletico Madrid.
In his last season, The Frenchman proved himself as arguably one of the best defensive midfielders in the world.
Though, in the away fixture, he featured in an unorthodox role in a three-man midfield with Tiemoue Bakayoko and Cesc Fabregas which proved to be very effective.
In Chelsea’s monthly magazine, Kante admits that his role in the switch in tactics by Antonio Conte played a vital part in the victory.
“It’s my first season in the Champions League and I enjoy to play this kind of game. Against Atletico we had a really good game, we made a lot of chances, we deserved to score first, but they did, and we reacted very well to that to win the match.”
“The manager changed my position. We played three midfielders and I needed to play a little bit further forward than my normal position, and I tried to traverse the attack of Atletico. It was a good game for the team.”
Kante was to the 30-man shortlist released by Ballon d’Or organizers France Football.
