Saurav Ganguly backs Virat Kohli to become one of India’s greatest captains

The captain who revolutionized the way India plays cricket, Saurav Ganguly, spoke ahead of the India-Australia T20 series. He was all praise for the 28-year old Indian captain and lauded him for his captaincy style and results in the recent past. Saurav, however also noted the bigger challenges that await the team abroad.

Saurav’s take On Kohli and Recent Performances

“Virat Kohli has got qualities of being one of India’s great captains, there’s no doubt about it. I think next 15 months will be important for him when India go to South Africa, England, Australia and the World Cup. I think he is in the right direction. He is preparing his team, he’s picking players and giving opportunities. They will beat New Zealand and Sri Lanka, there’s no doubt about it. India will be challenged when they go to South Africa but I feel this side has got the ability to do well there as well,” Ganguly told in an interview to India Today.

Saurav’s take On Squad for T20 series

Looking at the Indian squad for the 3-T20Is, it’s clear that the good performers in domestic cricket have been rewarded. Dinesh Karthik who was the leading run-scorer in the domestic competition keeps his spot in the squad. This comes after an impressive show in the West Indies in the ODIs.

Omissions to be noted are Ajinkya Rahane who had a stellar ODI series and this may show the lack of confidence in his ability to score quick runs. Also missing from the squad is Rishabh Pant who might have been judged based on his poor performance in the WI in the final T20I and he may have been asked to prove himself in the domestic competitions.

The selectors are also sending a very clear signal that age doesn’t matter and the only basis for selection is the performance by selecting Ashish Nehra in the squad. Saurav Ganguly also appreciated this move by the selectors in the interview.

“It’s a good news for Indian cricket that they have picked the ability and not age. He is an exceptional T20 bowler. We saw him in last T20 World Cup. He is a left arm bowler and he creates a different angle. I think he will come out with flying colors in this series as well,” Ganguly said.

Based on the recent performances of the team, India looks unbeatable on our home turf. The bench strength is almost as good as the playing 11 and the clinical performances are here to see for the fans. This culture is created by Virat and he leads by example. Despite the great performances, Virat will know bigger tests await abroad. But with the current attitude and form, he will be sure that team India can overcome them.
