Tottenham scout Valencia midfielder ahead of a possible transfer bid

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino

Tottenham have identified Geoffrey Kondogbia as a potential replacement for Moussa Dembele

Tottenham is currently languishing at 6th in the Premier League; 4 points off the top 4 and 18 points off league leaders Manchester City. Their squad has generally failed to deliver on last year’s promise. Apart from Harry Kane, no Tottenham attacker has been in good form and this shows in their results. Spurs have won once in their last 6 Premier League games. A truly appaling run for a Championship chasing team.

Although Spurs largely have a young squad tied down to long-term contracts; there is one exception to this rule. All action midfielder and one of Pochettino’s most trusted lieutenants Moussa Dembele has now entered his 30s. The Belgian only has 18 months left on his contract and Spurs are already preparing for life without him. They have earmarked 24-year-old Geoffrey Kondogbia as a long-term replacement.

Geoffrey Kondogbia: A story of flailing potential

Geoffrey Kondogbia began his senior career at Lens. He had a spell with Sevilla in 2012-13 following which he spent two years at Monaco. He got his big money move when moved to Inter in 2015 in a deal worth almost £30 million. This brought an end to the tug-of-war between the Milan clubs and Arsenal for the highly coveted midfielder. Then 22-year-old Kondogbia was supposed to be an anchor for the Inter midfield but what followed was a string of under-par performances. The Frenchman was not able to adjust to the Serie A. Another season and the same problems persisted. Despite making 43 appearances in two seasons he was not able to nail down a regular starting spot.

Geoffrey Kondogbia has been brilliant for Valencia for this season

At the beginning of 2017 season, Inter appointed Luciano Spaletti. The Italian deemed Kondogbia surplus to requirements at San Siro. Consequently, the 24-year-old moved to Valencia on loan. Los Che has been in great form this season, they are second in La Liga, just 5 points behind Barcelona. Kondogbia has started 12 games in Liga this season and has rehabilitated his reputation quite a lot.

Author’s Take

Geoffrey Kondogbia, in his current form, would be a great addition to Tottenham, However, Valencia will be a big hurdle in Tottenham’s way to sign the Frenchman. Valencia general director was reported saying that Valencia “have a right to buy at the end of the season and already have an agreement with Kondogbia, should we exercise the option.”

Kondogbia has represented French national team at all age levels from under-16. His talent has never been in doubt. However, he does need to maintain his level of hard work and application to fulfil his potential.
