Manchester United willing to swap Anthony Martial for World Cup finalist

Jose Mourinho continues to monitor Ivan Perisic’s situation at Inter and is willing to swap Anthony Martial for the Croatian

Manchester United are reportedly looking to begin their quest to sign long-standing target Ivan Perisic by using out-of-favour midfielder Anthony Martial as a sweetener. The French attacker will be sent to San Siro on loan in January to help facilitate this transfer.

It has to be remembered that this proposed swap was on the cards in the summer as well, with the Italian giants showing a keen interest in bringing in Martial. While that move never materialised, Inter have renewed their interests and want the former Monaco attacker at least for half a season, starting this winter.

What could further make this deal good for Inter is that UEFA has abolished the cup-tie rule, which will allow Martial to represent the Nerazzurri in the Champions League even if he has already played in the same competition for the Red Devils.

Martial, who joined United in summer 2015 for an initial £36 million when Louis van Gaal was the manager, has barely featured this season for United, and had an altercation with manager Jose Mourinho during pre-season. The signing of Alexis Sanchez had already seen his first-team chances go down, and this fracas has more or less ensured he will barely play a part for United this season, barring any miracles.

Signing Perisic also works for Mourinho, as he gets rid of a player who he has not shared the best of times with ever since arriving while bringing in a player linked with the club for the past two summers and for whom the Portuguese only has admiration. Perisic played a starring role in Croatia’s run to the World Cup final and is in the prime of his career, so the move seems to suit all parties.

Author’s take:

While it would be prudent to stick to Martial, 22, and look to make this work, one cannot help but feel it would suit Martial’s career to leave for pasture’s anew, knowing Mourinho’s style and his history with young players. Martial cannot afford to be on the bench, especially after missing out and subsequently falling off the radar of the French national team who won the World Cup this year.
