Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak has recently revealed that he would be open to joining a Premier League club in the future. The Slovenian has attracted interest from both Manchester United and Chelsea.
Oblak has been one of the best goalkeepers in the world since joining Atletico from Benfica in 2014. During his time in Madrid, he has played 298 games in all competitions, conceding just 209 goals, as well as keeping 157 clean sheets. He has won the Supercopa Espana, Europa League, and the UEFA Super Cup, while also reaching the Champions League final in 2017. He has been named La Liga’s best goalkeeper on four occasions so far.
This season, he has again been in very impressive form as Atletico find themselves in La Liga title charge. He has kept a league high 16 clean sheets in 33 league appearances this campaign. This has seen him get a WhoScored rating of 6.84, which is more than any other goalkeeper in the Spanish top-flight this season.
This form has seen him again spark interest from top European clubs including Premier League duo Manchester United and Chelsea.
Oblak dreams of playing in the Premier League:
Jan Oblak is confident that he could perform in England’s top flight and is open for a switch to the Premier League.
Speaking to Spanish Journalist Guillem Balague Youtube, Oblak admitted that he would like a join a Premier League club at some point in his career. He said:
“The Premier League has strong teams. Maybe the strongest. But I think in the end is what the coach is asking of you. You listen to his instructions. It doesn’t matter if it’s the Premier League, Italian league, Spanish league, wherever you go, you need to do what the coach is asking you to do.
I don’t know what the future will bring. But I am sure in any league I would play, I could play well. You never know what will happen in the future. Now I have been in Spain for seven years. I’m still young. Not so young anymore, but I still have some years in front of me. Let’s see what the future will bring.”
Will United or Chelsea make a move?
Manchester United and Chelsea are monitoring the situation of Jan Oblak in Madrid. The 28-year-old keeper has two years left on his current contract at the Wanda Metropolitano. And Atletico will only allow him to leave the club when his release clause of £102 million is triggered.
Both Premier League clubs are pretty happy with their goalkeeping situation at the moment. The Red Devils have two very able shot-stoppers in David de Gea and Dean Henderson. Both have played their part in United’s season so far. One of them might leave this summer and the club will look to add a backup goalkeeper. But Oblak is too good to play second-fiddle at any club.
Similar to United, Chelsea have good goalkeepers at their disposal. They spent £22 million on Edouard Mendy last summer and he has proven to be a very good investment for the club. They still have much-criticised Kepa Arrizabalaga and offloading him would be a huge task for them, as his contract runs till 2025.
As it stands, United and Chelsea are admirers of Oblak but any move for him this summer is highly unlikely. No club will pay £102 million even for a goalkeeper of Oblak’s standard in this current financial climate.
