Formula 1 News: Toto Wolff thinks Lewis Hamilton is playing “against the odds”

Formula 1 News: Mercedes boss Toto Wolff thinks that Lewis Hamilton is fighting against the probability of winning the championship.

Formula 1 News: Mercedes are currently five points ahead of Red Bull in the championship fight. Meanwhile, their ace Lewis Hamilton is only eight points behind Max Verstappen in the drivers’ standings.

However, in the last two races, Hamilton has slashed a considerable amount of points difference against the Dutchman. Now, the competition is tighter than ever with the last two races to go.

The F1 experts claim that the momentum is with Mercedes, as in the last two races they have equipped the new engine, giving a considerable power compared to the Honda engine used by Red Bull.

Though, Mercedes didn’t even use their fresh engine in Qatar. Yet, Hamilton managed to overpower Verstappen with a considerable margin. Now, it remains to be seen how things will turn out in the last two races.

Formula 1 News: Lewis Hamilton is not the favourite

Despite Hamilton’s winning spree, Mercedes boss Toto Wolff thinks the Brit is playing against the odds in the fight against Verstappen. Though, the eight-point difference will be equalized if Hamilton wins on Sunday.

The main argument presented by Wolff is that as a finance person himself, the probability lies with Verstappen. And also it isn’t necessary that always the faster car will win, there are several other aspects too.

“The chances and the odds are against us,” assessed Wolff as per the GPFans. “It’s very plain- we require to win both races. This is the obvious summary. Accomplishing a race is not only down to the quickest car and the fastest driver but reliability has a staggering impact.”

“That is just the nature of motor racing. In essence, we never thought we would be playing for the title at this step of the season. But we’ve had two phenomenal race weekends and we just want to have more in order to struggle for this championship.”

Formula 1 News: We never gave up after Mexico

While the consensus after the Mexican Grand Prix remained that Verstappen has his one hand on the 2021 title, Wolff reveals that Mercedes never stopped believing after that.

The race in Mexico was followed by the spicy engine drama in Brazil. Hamilton cruised past 19 cars to claim his 101 wins in Formula 1. And it overturned the trends of the 2021 F1 season, defining the unpredictability of the competition this year.

“We never give up,” said Wolff.  “But following Mexico, the viewpoint was grim, again from a pure probability attitude. It’s much better here, we have it in our cards, which is super-exciting and also amusing, and clearly, we know the stresses that occur with that.

“I very much wish it goes all the way down to Abu Dhabi because that suggests we have a possibility to win it there and it is the greatest man and most solid machine that wins, and whoever wins worthinesses the win.”
