Saudi Arabian GP 2021 Qualifying: Lewis Hamilton got his pole position in Saudi Arabia after Max Verstappen smashes his car in the wall.

Saudi Arabian GP Qualifying: The Saudi Arabian Grand Prix buildup has been immensely dramatic. With Lewis Hamilton allegedly impeding Nikita Mazepin and Pierre Gasly.

Hamilton, for that, was under investigation before the opposite camp protested over the decision. However, none of it mattered for the seven-time world champion as he went on to grab the pole.

Though, it was under some unfortunate circumstances for Red Bull against which Hamilton got his desirable spot. At his last flying lap, Verstappen was cruising past Hamilton’s best time in the Q3.

When he locked up at one corner in the last sector and gave away the pole position to Hamilton, Valtteri Bottas finished on P2 to lock the front row for the Silver Arrows.

Saudi Arabian GP 2021 Qualifying: Max Verstappen absolutely gutted

Verstappen looked off colours during the post-qualifying and gave away only a few words. He confessed that the P3 position is far from a flawless finish for him in the qualifying.

“It’s of course appalling,” said Verstappen during the post-qualifying interview. “Overall it was a great qualifying, I recognised the pace was there and it bestowed at the end. I don’t really know what transpired but I locked up.”

“I still worked to put the car on the track and keep going but trimmed the rear and had to stop. P3 is, of course, a bit frustrating knowing what lap I was on. Nevertheless, it reveals the car is quick and let’s wait what we can do at the end of the race.”

Hamilton is now in the ideal position to further cut down the eight-point deficit he faces against his 24-year-old rival. If Hamilton and Verstappen maintain 1-2 respectively, then the two drivers will land in Abu Dhabi with a one-point difference, excluding the fastest lap point.

Best teammate ever

Meanwhile, Hamilton is delighted with his results and was pleased to learn that his teammate will protect him from P2. After the qualifying, he reiterated that Bottas is the best teammate. But this time, he emphasised, in the history of the sport.

Feeling sad for Hamilton’s other teammates. Especially Nico Rosberg, who in Italy this summer said, “what about me?” When he first heard this praise by Hamilton for the Finnish race driver.

Nevertheless, Bottas has stated that he will try his best to assist Mercedes in the last two races to grab the two championships this year. In which, so far, he’s in the right direction.

Now, it remains to be seen whether Bottas would manage to defend against Verstappen on Sunday. In his last flying lap, the Dutchman was clocking two-tenths better time than Hamilton. But the narrow lanes of Jeddah can help a bit.
