Defending champions Chelsea are in deep trouble at the moment. Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City have taken an unassailable lead of nine points over the Blues after 11 fixtures played, and it seems like all is not well at the Stamford Bridge. January is fast approaching and it should provide an opportunity to manager Antonio Conte to make all the repairs he can to his weakened squad.
Chelsea has never been shy about spending money and they need to make a few tweaks to their roster in the next transfer window, to possibly make a comeback in the title race before its too late. Here is a list of three players on whom Conte can rely on, to help Chelsea defend their league title.
1- Mauro Icardi
Icardi has been in devastating form for Inter Milan this season.
The Blues have been linked with the Argentine forward for quite some time now. Icardi is on the radar of many European clubs but Chelsea remains the favourite to acquire his signature. The Inter Milan skipper has 11 goals to his name already, including a hat-trick against rivals AC Milan.
Antonio Conte signed Alvaro Morata earlier this season and the Spanish forward has proved to be a decent signing so far, but he still may need support up front. Icardi could be the saviour Conte’s men need at the moment with Michy Batshuayi not performing consistently. Chelsea have been relying on Morata too much and signing Icardi would ease the pressure and responsibility on the Spaniard, further allowing Conte to field two world-class strikers at the same time.
2- Lucas Moura
The Brazilian has seen his game time reduced drastically after the arrival of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe at PSG, which could prompt him to move on. Chelsea must move quickly in order to sign the out of favour winger who can further help the Blues bolster their attack. Antonio Conte has used Willian sparingly and selling him could raise the funds needed to sign Moura.
The 25-year-old has made just five appearances under Unai Emery this season, having scored four goals and providing one assist across all competitions. Antonio Conte is a man who loves to deploy wide men, and Moura has already shown in his time with PSG that he is a master of men when it comes to playing on the flanks. Also, reports suggest that the winger would cost the Blues £27 million which is quite some bargain.
3- Leon Goretzka
Schalke midfielder Leon Goretzka is currently being courted by some of the top clubs in Europe, and Chelsea is not too far behind in the race. The German has been a prime target for Juventus and Liverpool, although the player himself hinted that a move to the Premier League could be on the cards.
Chelsea would be kicking themselves if they allow the 22-year-old prodigy to join Liverpool, and so they must act soon to acquire his services. Goretzka could add more steel to the central midfield position, where the Blues have looked a little thin this season after the departure of Nemanja Matic.
The German has scored four goals so far this season and has just six months before his current contract expires, so Chelsea can sign him for free in January which would be a big plus for the Blues.
Given Mitchy Batshuayi’s inconsistency in front of goal, Chelsea desperately need reinforcements in attacking department which could be in the form of Mauro Icardi. Replacing Willian with Lucas Moura for a nominal fee of £27 million seems like a smart move that will add to Conte’s options on the flanks. Leon Goretzka looks like a future star and Chelsea desperately need more variety in the central midfield, so signing the 22-year-old would certainly be smart business.
