It came as a surprise to many in the last season when Liverpool spent first three months looking like genuine title contenders and even the fierce rivals can admit that Jurgen Klopp has slightly overachieved by managing to get the Reds back into the Champions League for only the second time in last eight seasons.

Having signed Salah recently, The Reds are having high hopes of having a fair shot in the title race. Here are 5 things that Liverpool needs to do  make this year ‘their year’:

#1. Buy a left back

Let us cast our minds back to the summer of 2014 when Alberto Moreno came as the answer but unfortunately for Liverpool, he just doesn’t know how to defend. James Milner came to the rescue last season doing an admiral job playing out of position and was lethal from the penalty spot, but he is not a left back. Liverpool has to spend wisely for whoever they are gonna bring in with Hull City Andrew Robertson is being talked about.

#2 Reinforce the Midfield

Last season was one of the positives for Liverpool’s midfield. No one has improved more immensely than Adam Lallana since Klopp has taken over. Emre Can when he is having an off day the can be frustrating but he is one of the most influential in the midfield and we cannot complain about Wijnaldum who won over the crowd at Kop with his performances. The negative surrounds Captain Jordan Henderson because of his injury concerns from the past two seasons but when played he looked comfortable in the deeper midfield role with his passing and reading the game.Injury problems for Can and Henderson have caused many problems in Liverpool midfield last season. Naby Keita from RB Leipzig is being talked about, we can see reinforcement in the midfield

#3. Defensive leadership

With all the pace and attacking prowess that Liverpool had they lacked defensive stability throughout the last season. Jurgen Klopp should definitely bring a big centre back to the Kop and form a solid defensive partnership with Joel Matip.Nathaniel Clyne has consistently put in solid performances at the right back but Liverpool needs improvements in defense.

#4. Bring in Number 9

Daniel Sturridge and Divock Origi are the only out and out strikers in the team while former is injury prone and latter is still young. With pace on the wings with the likes of Mohammed Salah and Sadio Mane and the creativity in the midfield with likes of Coutinho, Henderson and Lallana Reds should bring in a perfect number 9 to finish off chances created by their talented midfield.

#5. Tactical Flexibility

For the majority of last season, Klopp stuck with his favoured 4-3-3 formation. It’s good against top teams and the sides who come to play and there are too many laboured performances against sides content to sit back and play on the break. He used the 4-2-3-1 system at Dortmund. This system has origins in the 4-4-2 he played in at Mainz 05, but the movement of the wide players and the wondering of Mario Gotze created the 4-2-3-1 he became known for.Klopp should slow down their heavy metal football against smaller teams and try to finish off games which they failed to do last season.

This summer more than ever Transfer activity is key to taking the club’s ambitions to the fans and doesn’t lose any big names then this year can be Liverpool’s year.
