Alpine-Renault have decided to halt the development of this season’s car and confirmed that they are 100% focusing on the next Formula 1 season’s car. The difficult decision might come as a shock to some, but it was a long time coming. The French constructors will be stopping the current car’s development after the Hungarian Grand Prix this weekend.

The new regulations regarding the cars which will be applied from the next season were released at Silverstone. As a result, Alpine have decided to completely focus on that. The new cars are expected to make the championship gaps closer and tougher.

New regulations also mean getting all the things ready for the switch, which is no small feat. As the Summer break begins after Hungarian GP, the factories will be shut down for at least two weeks.

Alpine Executive Director Marcin Budkowski said that they will be focusing 100% on 2022. A few parts will, however, be made for this season.

Alpine, however, will be gunning for a double point finish this weekend as the season has been rocky for them. They have only managed to get three double points finish this year. Currently 7th on the Constructor’s Championship standings, they will be looking forward to a good result on Sunday.

The reason for the switch by Alpine

Alpine not being good this season is an understatement. They have had some terrible results at their hands this year. The cars have been stabilising now however as the drivers are looking decent. Fernando Alonso has been pushing the car to its absolute limits as we saw in Silverstone.

They believe to have accepted the defeat this season against their mid table rivals McLaren and Ferrari. McLaren, who have been absolutely wonderful since the beginning of the season, are well clear of any competition from Alpine. Ferrari have also found a stable and a fast car and will be relying on it. They have also decided to make the focus switch to the 2022 season.

Both the drivers have turned their Focus Mode on as they go to Hungarian GP. They will be expected to end up in double points, if Alpine wants to achieve their dream of ending 2021 season at 5th.

The new car rules will be leading to a huge challenge back at the factories. As a result, Alpine have decided to get a head-start. Starting after the 2-week summer break, the R&D will be focusing on 2022 car as they will have almost 7 months to develop a good car.

As the development being stopped at the factory, Alpine will be highly relying on both the drivers to perform and get up to at-least fifth in the Championship.

Recent forms of both the drivers has been looking good. Ocon after a shaky start has been getting more and more consistent as the season has progressed and has been getting points for the team.
