Dani Alves told his Juventus team-mates they would win the Champions League when he arrived from Barcelona in the summer, according to Gianluigi Buffon.
The legendary goalkeeper has never won Europe’s premier competition, and Saturday’s final could well represent his last opportunity to secure the trophy.
By the arrival of Alves, who has already won it three times, the whole team is pretty positive about winning the final.
Buffon will not only win a Champions League trophy if Juventus wins the final but also will have strong chances of winning Ballon d’Or.
‘I did say when he signed [that I hoped he would help us win the Champions League],’ Buffon said at a press conference.
‘He’s like me, an optimist, and he said he would! He’s been a revelation for me, not as a player as we all know what he can do, but off the pitch, there’s a lot more to him than what you see on it.
‘We have trust in our capabilities, we’re confident, but we also feel humble. Real Madrid are used to winning finals while we’ve lost quite a few, so it’s a good match in that sense and we’re going to try to overturn our record in history.’
Juventus have enjoyed a hugely successful season so far, already securing two domestic trophies in Serie A and the Coppa Italia.
As we’re all aware that the Final will probably be a battle of Attack Vs Defence, with World class attackers like Ronaldo, Benzema, Isco going against one of the best defenders like Buffon with his back three.
‘I wouldn’t dream of putting myself on the same pedestal as Ronaldo,’ Buffon admits. ‘We have completely different roles – mine is to defend, his is to attack. We’re complete opposites.
‘All I can do is try to not concede goals, but he is able to determine the outcome of a match much more. I’m pleased the media tend to see tomorrow’s game as a battle between me and Cristiano, but it’s not the reality.’
