Ander Herrera could be Jose Mourinho’s new Didier Drogba

Manchester United won the Europa League with a 2-0 win over Ajax at the Friends Arena in Stockholm. The victory came on the back of a terrorist attack in Manchester. This victory and the football in general was put in perspective this week with Mourinho saying that “We’d [players and management himself] exchange cup for Manchester lives”.

The victory capped off a mixed bag season for United on a high note. Despite the topsy turvy season, Ander Herrera’s all action displays have been a shining beacon of light in United’s midfield. Jose Mourinho has played Herrera in all the big games and the 27-year-old has repaid his manager’s faith handsomely. He has been an unsung hero for United this term, contributing in every aspect of the game. His stats are right up there with the best midfielders in the league, his unflashy style of play lets him fly under the radar while making precious contributions.

“Ander Herrera can be like Pepe or Drogba”

Jamie Redknapp believes that Herrera has been a teacher’s pet under Jose Mourinho. He reckons that he could be Jose’s new ‘Master of Dark Arts’. He will join a long list of players such as Didier Drogba, Marco Materazzi and Pepe. These were the guys who had an ability to create trouble on the field. They dived, cheated and fouled their way out of the match when things were getting tough. They were highly polished at in-game psychology, getting under the skin of the opposition, provoking them throughout the match. As of yet, Herrera doesn’t seem to have the knack for these things but he has certainly shown potential. He has committed 47 fouls and secured 5 yellow cards in the league this season. His man marking job on Eden Hazard can also be taken as a hint for what lies ahead.

Herrera does not mind doing the dirty work

The diminutive midfielder is a workhorse in the midfield running from box to box throughout the match. He is already a fan favourite at Old Trafford and could be one of the icons if he decides to stay despite rumoured interest from the Blaugrana. For now, he is set to continue his partnership with Paul Pogba for years to come in the heart of United’s midfield.
