Pele’s comment about Messi having only one skill created a bemused environment. According to some, it was a wrong assessment of the mercurial Argentinian. Over the years Messi have broken many records including Pele’s and to judge him to not score headers is completely unjustice. Former club mate of Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta gives his opinion on Pele’s comments.
Andres Iniesta is reluctant to be drawn on Pele’s claims that Lionel Messi only has “one skill”. A former team-mate of the mercurial Argentine believes his qualities remain without question. Regardless of what a Brazilian legend might think, the Spaniard has different opinions to it. The Brazilian icon caused some bemusement last week with his assessment of a five-time Ballon d’Or winner and all-time great.
Pele claimed that Messi is over-reliant on his left foot, with his own game more complete as he was strong with both feet and good in the air. Iniesta, who spent 14 years alongside a mercurial Argentine at Camp Nou before heading to Japan, is not convinced that a record-breaking goal machine can be considered ordinary.
For him, Messi will always be the greatest. Regardless of what others might think or what the vote for the 2018 Ballon d’Or suggest. The Barca legend told reporters at a promotional event: “I do not want to answer what Pele said. But he [Messi] is the best player in history. He’s got all the records: headers, skills, right-footed shots, left-footed shots. I have not seen anyone do what he does and every year he exceeds my expectations.”
Iniesta further said, “Being fifth [in the Ballon d’Or voting] is not an insult. But for me he is the best. It would be bad to say that it was unfair for [Luka] Modric to win, he had a great season.”
What Iniesta said is completely right. However, Pele’s comments are wrong. The fact that Messi has broken so many records including some record set by Pele tells you he’s a gift to football. Messi has scored goals from heads but not as much he scored from the left foot or right. It’s unfair to judge someone like that and one has to appreciate the beauty that Messi brought to this wonderful game.
