Manchester City have reportedly reignited their interest in Ben Chilwell, according to the Sun report. The Citizens have time and again been linked to Leicester City’s left-back but nothing came into being. However, with three left-backs already in the squad, the pursuit for another seems like an ambitious signing.
Oleksandr Zinchenko had recently signed a new three-year contract and is at the club until 2024 summer. It seemed that his impressive performance and Angelino’s arrival at Etihad would shelve the plans to bring Chilwell. But with Benjamin Mendy being a disappointment and the shallowness in defence the plan to bring the English international has reignited.
Moreover, in an interesting turn of events, Leicester City are preparing for a life without Chilwell. Brendon Rodgers has asked his scouts to look for a new replacement of Chilwell. Nonetheless, City are not the lone runners to sign the young left-back. Chelsea are also reportedly interested in him. But Pep Guardiola has an upper hand as Frank Lampard will have to wait until the summer to try their luck. According to the report by the Sun, the Foxes could demand anywhere near £50m for Chilwell.
Does Manchester City need left-back or centre-backs?
With Mendy’s injury-laden tenure with City, Zinchenko’s has become the first choice for Guardiola. Mendy has largely been a disappointment. He has been mostly away from the squad due to injury. Moreover, he was benched against the Wolves. This could be a signal that City might be looking for a new left-back to replace him.
However, for now, Mendy is with the club until 2022 summer. It means that putting another left-back in the mix would be a question mark about the club’s spending. City also signed Joao Cancelo from Juventus in summer. The versatility of the Portuguese should solve Guardiola’s full-back conundrum.
The main area of concern at Etihad has been their central defence position. Ever since Vincent Kompany’s departure, the centre-defence has looked shallow. Also, with Aymeric Laporte injured and Otamendi and Fernandhino being a disappointment in the last few games,
Manchester City should look for a potential central defender in the January window. John Stones has had the same story as Mendy — injury and bad performance. Manchester City has already dropped eight points early in the season and are currently sitting second behind Liverpool.
