Antoine Griezmann has admitted to goalscoring problems that has plagued Atletico Madrid this season.
The Rojiblancos have had an underwhelming start to the season. Despite having the second-best defence in the league, Atletico have faced problems in the goalscoring department. Consequently, they sit fourth in La Liga table having won just two of their last nine games in all competitions. Griezmann himself has scored just two goals in 11 La Liga games this season.
Atletico are currently preparing to face Real Madrid in the season’s first Madrid derby. Real who have had a troublesome start themselves, still go into the derby as favourites. The fact that Rojiblancos transfer embargo prevented them from bringing in new players this summer has not helped at all.
The Frenchman believes that the fans are excited for the first Madrid derby in Wanda Metropolitano. “It’s a game to win, in the new stadium people will come into it with great enthusiasm. It is a very important game for the fans and for the club,” he said.
“These are very nice games to play in, where I always try to help the team. They are very important games when you win and also when you lose because you always learn something.”
Griezmann addressed the goalscoring issues saying all they need is a little bit of luck up front. He said, “We are having problems. During the week in training, the goals flow easily but then in the game not so much, but we have to continue working, believing in the coach and our teammates. Defensively we are well and we only need luck in the front. We have to work and improve.”
Atletico have faced difficulties since moving to their new stadium. Their goalscoring exploits have been nothing to boast of this season. Despite having Griezmann, Koke, Yannick Ferriera-Carrasco and the likes in their ranks, Los Colcheneros have scored multiple times this season on just four separate occasions. This has led to a dismal record of playing 9 draws in their last 16 outings.
This season was supposed to be a new dawn for Atletico but they have stagnated. Diego Simeone will certainly wish for January to come early so that he can field his summer signings, Diego Costa and Vitolo. There is bound be an upturn in their goals per game ratio when those two become eligible to play. Until then Griezmann and his teammates will just have to pull up their socks and score Atleti out of their current form.
