Chelsea boss Antonio Conte has lavished his new arrivals Danny Drinkwater and Tiemoue Bakayoko with praise.
While Alvaro Morata and Antonio Rudiger settled rather quickly into the Chelsea side and even started playing regularly for the club, Antonio Conte’s other two signings took some time to adjust to his tactics and methods. As a result, both Danny Drinkwater and Tiemoue Bakayoko have struggled and have come under fire from fans and critics about their performances.
However, despite that manager, Antonio Conte has praised the two central midfielders for their performances over the last few games. With Chelsea suffering from a lack of squad depth, the Blues brought in both Drinkwater and Bakayoko to bolster the midfielder and while they have struggled, the two new arrivals are finally showing some promise.
While Bakayoko has been revitalized after scoring his second goal in the first week of December, Danny Drinkwater has just managed to find his footing in the Chelsea team after missing out nearly 12 games thanks to multiple injuries. He also opened his account with the Blues, after a stunning goal in Chelsea’s 5-0 thrashing of Stoke City.
During his post-match interview, Antonio Conte went on to say, “Compared to last season, we changed players. We bought two central midfielders, Bakayoko and Drinkwater.
For the characteristics of our players, to play with three midfielders is a good option. For me to be able to alternate two different systems, 3-4-3 and 3-5-2, is great. When we play against a big team, it’s very important to have more solidity with the three midfielders and two strikers, and to give more freedom to Eden,” added Conte.
“And I am very happy because I have seen my players show great ability at adapting themselves, and changing to a system by finding new solutions and memorised play. It was great for me to understand that this other option was good, and also fantastic that my players can do it.”
Both Danny Drinkwater and Tiemoue Bakayoko were brought in to provide back-up to Cesc Fabregas and N’Golo Kante, and while Bakayoko did flourish at Monaco last season the Frenchman has had a tough time this season. However, it looks like both the new signings have found their footing and given Chelsea’s current form, they need to make sure they continue improving and performing better if the Blues want to give Manchester City a run for their money.
