Arsenal on collision course with domestic rivals for Juventus defender

Unai Emery Arsenal

Arsenal are eyeing a cut-price deal for Juventus centre-back but face serious competition from Manchester United with Mourinho also fancying the player.

These are encouraging time around the Emirates following Unai Emery’s arrival as Arsene Wenger’s successor. Currently, on an unbeaten run, Arsenal have been as free-scoring as they have ever been over the past decade. However, while their attack is firing on all cylinders, the defence still remains porous. They have conceded at an average of more than a goal a game in the Premier League.

Of course, it has not been helped by the fact that Emery only has 4 senior defenders at his disposal which include the perennially injured Lauren Koscienly and still inexperienced Rob Holding. Considering this, Arsenal have been linked with a move for Juventus defender Medhi Benatia.

The Moroccan has been with Juventus for the past 2 seasons after moving to Turin from Bayern Munich. He had hoped to become a regular by this time but Leonardo Bonucci’s return meant that Benatia is below him and Chiellini in the pecking order. He is looking for his way out this January and could be available for a cut-price deal.

According to TuttomercatowebArsenal have made the first contact with Benatia’s entourage over a possible move in the January transfer window. It is claimed centre-back Benatia could be available for around £13m (€15m). Manchester United are also in the hunt. Mourinho continues to monitor a list of potential centre-backs and the 31-year-old is an enticing prospect. Serie A giants AC Milan, like Arsenal, have also made the player’s entourage aware of their interest.

Author’s Take

Medhi Benatia, at 31, has been on the lookout for some first-team action. While a move to North London would be great for his career, it would not be the best move for Arsenal. They should rather go for a younger centre-back and future their defence a bit.
