Tottenham Hotspur are planning to make some big changes to their squad ahead of the 2021/22 campaign. Spurs chief Daniel Levy made some bold moves by the end of the last term, including the sacking of Jose Mourinho. Following which the North London side had a tough time bringing in a new manager.
Nuno Espirito Santos was the man who finally agreed to take the job. Santos was impressive at Wolverhampton Wanderers before leaving the side last term. Spurs are hoping to see Nuno Santos help the club win silverware after years of waiting.
Santos has already made an introduction at Tottenham Hotspur. The Athletic reports that many of the players are happy with the arrival of the new manager. But Santos has a big task of shaping the squad into one that he is comfortable with.
The Portuguese is already planning to make a few adjustments to his midfield. Lorenzo Pellegrini is one of the top names that Tottenham are targeting this summer. Alongside other stars, however, Spurs face competition from other Premier League sides.
Pellegrini top target for Tottenham Hotspur:
The Italian midfielder was able to show his skill to the world during Euro 2020. Hence, catching the attention of many European clubs. It seems like Tottenham Hotspur are the ones showing the most interest in the player. But it seems AS Roma are not too keen to lose him this summer.
However, Tottenham can activate Pellegrini’s €30m release clause. This will make the move easier for the English side. But Roma are trying to block Tottenham’s plans, which indicates that Tottenham may be offering a sum lower than €30m. If the Italian side continue to restrict the transfer, Tottenham may try and activate the release clause.
This will in effect be useful for AS Roma, as they are keen to sign Granit Xhaka from Arsenal. The Gunners are reportedly asking €20m for the Switzerland midfielder. But Roma don’t have enough transfer funds at the moment to fund this move.
But if Tottenham move forward and activate the €30m release clause. Roma will have enough money to spare to fund the Xhaka deal. Hence if Tottenham find Pellegrini a key player to add to their squad this summer. We may see Arsenal lose Xhaka in the process.
Boon or Bane for Arsenal?
Granit Xhaka has a mixed fanbase at Arsenal due to his inconsistent form. The Switz has not been in great form at Arsenal for so long that many fans are hoping the Gunners will sell him soon. However, some of the fans feel that Xhaka may be of assistance this term after his Euro 2020 performance.
As it stands, Arsenal are hoping to part ways with Granit Xhaka. AS Roma are the keen admirers of the midfielder. However, their likeliness of signing the midfielder solely depends on Tottenham Hotspur for now. As the €30m that Spurs may splash for Pellegrini is the only source that Roma can use to spend on Xhaka.
But Tottenham are also keeping a close eye on Pellegrini’s fellow Italian team-mate, Nicolo Barella. The midfielder has also been a key player for the Italian side in the Euros. Hence, Tottenham are hoping to sign him as well. But unlike Pellegrini, Barella comes at a more expensive rate.
Tottenham and Nuno Santos plan to make some changes to a couple of their positions. Hence, they may not be too keen to bust it all on a single player. With a player of a similar caliber available at a lower price tag. Hence, it is likely for them to make a move for Pellegrini, and this may ultimately result in Arsenal losing Xhaka.
