Arsenal to hijack deal for Chelsea’s top target

Luis Enrique has emerged as a top target for Arsenal and the Gunners will go head to head with Chelsea for the Spaniard’s signatures

Several high-profile managerial changes are expected to go through in the summer. European heavyweights, Real Madrid and Paris Saint Germain are looking for replacements for underperforming Zinedine Zidane and Unai Emery.

In the Premier League, the men with the least job security currently are Antonio Conte and quite surprisingly, Arsene Wenger. Arsenal failed to put up a fight this season once again, as a consequence of which Wenger could face the sack in the summer.

Arsene Wenger’s career at Arsenal is in its dying stages…

The Frenchman has come under severe criticism recently and opened up this tight budget to allow the arrivals of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyanh and Henrikh Mkhitaryan to appease the hoards of angry fans. However, his stay at the Emirates might not last too long.

Mundo Deportivo is reporting that the Gunners are eying Luis Enrique as their manager for the next season and beyond. The former Barcelona manager won the treble with the Catalans and is currently in the middle of his year-long sabbatical. He is reported to be keen on a job in the Premier League but has ruled any mid-season moves.

Chelsea has been front-runners for Enrique’s signature up until recently. However, this news could throw a spanner in the works for Roman Abramovich. Enrique remains Abramovich’s top priority but he has lined up backups such as Napoli manager Maurizio Sarri. With his release clause currently standing at a measly £8 million, he is well within Chelsea’s range.

Author’s Take

The end of Wenger’s reign at the helm of Arsenal is long overdue. He has spent 2 successful seasons at the club, but it is time for him to move on now. Luis Enrique also seems like a better suit for Arsenal than Chelsea. Irrespective of the manager, Chelsea have been known to be quite defensive while Wenger’s naturally attacking play holds a lot of similarity with that of Enrique.
