Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is someone who never shies away from singing praises on players. He always gives credit where credit is due even if he is an opposition player. The Spaniard spoke highly of former Arsenal player Theo Walcott while addressing the reporters at the press conference.
Walcott has been one of the important parts of Arsenal football history. The England international has netted more than 100 goals for the club. The Spaniard who played with Englishman during his heydays at Arsenal will lock horns with each other this weekend.
The Gunners will cross swords with the Saints in an away fixture at St Mary’s Stadium in the 4th Round of FA Cup clash on January 22. It will be quite interesting to see how both teams would go toe-to-toe with each other.
Southampton has always been a team that ruffled Arsenal’s feathers during their meetings. The previous meeting between these two teams ended in a 1-1 draw at the Emirates. Now both teams will kick-off their battle in the FA Cup competition on Saturday afternoon.
The defending champions would be licking their lips to perform well in the competition they enjoyed more success than any other team. Arsenal won the prestigious FA Cup a record 14 times and will be looking forward to defending the trophy this time around.
Meanwhile, Southampton will give absolutely everything to give a tough fight at home. The Saints are aware of the 0-5 humiliation they suffered at the hands of the Gunners in the 2017 FA Cup clash. Southampton conceded too many goals at home in the 4th Round of the FA Cup competition.
Walcott looks really good: Arteta
While speaking to Football London, Mikel Arteta said Walcott looks ‘really good’ this season. Arteta has no doubts whatsoever that he will show his potential against his former club. Walcott haunted the Arsenal fans when he scored and celebrated against them in a 1-1 draw at the Emirates.
“Well, I think he looks really good this season that’s for sure. He’s played a lot of minutes. He scored against us a very typical Theo Walcott goal when he played at the Emirates.
He was a teammate of mine, a great lad and I’m happy that he’s doing well because he’s gone through some difficult periods with some really bad injuries as well and he deserves that,” Arteta added.
Arsene Wenger sold Walcott to Everton
Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was the one who traded Theo to Everton 3 years ago. He was sold for a transfer fee of worth £20 million as reported by The Telegraph. Although he initially thrived well at Everton, he couldn’t deliver the goods in the longer run.
The forward faced so many struggles on the pitch before falling out of Ancelloti’s set-up. Walcott was warming the bench more often than not as he couldn’t keep his place under Carlo Ancelloti.
In order to get enough game time, he joined the Saints on loan from Everton last summer. Nonetheless, the 31-year-old has lived up to the reputation so far as he netted 2 goals and provided 3 assists in his 13 Premier League games for the Saints this season.
