Arsenal News: The Gunners have had problems concerning their captaincy in recent seasons. But could Matteo Guendouzi be an answer to their problems?
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is the most recent captain to have a fall-out with Arsenal. The Gabonese international has been sidelined from even training with the squad since January.
As per reports, Aubameyang committed a “disciplinary breach”. Following this, Mikel Arteta has removed him as the captain and frozen him out of the club. The situation is so bad that according to multiple sources, the center-forward could even be leaving the North London club in January itself.
Not just Aubameyang, but even Granit Xhaka was recently removed from the captaincy role. Currently, Alexandre Lacazette has been given the armband, but the French striker does not have a long-term future at the club.
Arsenal News: Jorge Sampaoli praises Matteo Guendouzi’s leadership skills
Olympique Marseille manager Jorge Sampaoli recently spoke about Matteo Guendouzi and praised his leadership skills. The Arsenal midfielder is currently on loan at the French club until the end of the season.
Jorge Sampaoli talked about the midfielder in a recent press conference. The Argentine said “Aside from his youth, Matteo Guendouzi has a particular energy. He has a desire to win and he’s a natural leader.”
The Marseille manager added that he did Guendouzi to develop himself and grow as an individual. But Sampaoli is equally surprised by how much energy and character the youngster displays on the field.
The former Argentinian National team manager then added, “It is contagious and it’s a very important value in life. Experience is important for everyone but, for young people, sometimes difficult events are not good experiences.”
Sampaoli also praised the Frenchman’s mental capacity. He added that even though Guendouzi is just 22-years old; he behaves like a 30-year-old veteran. The manager hence added that Matteo Guendouzi would make a great captain in the coming days.
Matteo Guendouzi has played 27 times for Marseille this season. In this, he has also scored 2 goals for the French club. Marseille currently sit third in the Ligue 1 table and are vying for the automatic qualification places for next season’s UEFA Champions League.
Will Guendouzi want a return to Arsenal?
The biggest question for Arsenal supporters would be if the Frenchman would want a return to North London. Matteo Guendouzi was loaned out to Bundesliga club Hertha BSC for the 2020/21 season. Similarly, he was loaned out to Marseille for the 2021/22 season.
As per reports, Guendouzi had a fallout with Mikel Arteta, and the two have not been on talking terms since. Hence, it has to be seen what decision the Frenchman takes in the summer.
