Mikel Arteta is looking for depth in the midfield as the transfer window intensifies.
Arsenal is looking for options in their midfield after their FA Cup win. As the transfer rumors intensify with each passing day, they look for better players that can suit their needs. The preference for the ‘Emery era’ players looks to fall as the manager rummages European markets.
Mikel Arteta has been trying to increase quality in the middle of the park ever since the window opened. But lack of funds and the pandemic have been serious hurdles stifling the transfer markets. In fact, the fall in revenue looks the worst since the Great Depression.
Amidst the tidal waves of pessimism, Real Madrid has refused to allow Dani Ceballos on loan next season. That would clearly mean Arteta’s midfield pivot, the pairing with Granit Xhaka are all in jeopardy. The Gunners need someone in the midfield – sooner or later.
While Arteta looks at his books, the club already has nullified 55 positions. Interestingly, Ozil continues to draw a hefty salary of £350,000 a week. The season starts next season and the German has no potential exit routes too. With a fractured midfield, the London-based club are busy pondering options – swap, a loan or buy.
Arsenal planning to go for Roma midfielder
Arsenal has looked up to Roma to sell one of their outcasts. Then, the Gunners were under a different manager. Now that the team is reshaping under Arteta, they have turned their attention again. This time with a swap deal in mid, according to Gazzetta Dello Sport.
Amadou Diawara has played for Roma 22 times this season, with a goal and an assist. He has an amazing passing percentage of about 89% per game (Source: WhoScored). Additionally, he has been effective both as a central midfielder as well as defensive midfielder.
The Gunners want to swap him with Uruguayan Lucas Torreira. The former Sampdoria midfielder arrived at Emirates with tremendous promise under Unai Emery. But injuries and the rise of Dani Ceballos have reduced his game time. So much so, that he is ready to leave.
Why Diawara transfer looks a great deal?
Arteta’s side may have a few players he wants to sell, including Ozil, Guendouzi, Sokratis and Lacazette. But the problem with most of them lies with the availability of clients. However, the exchange of Torreira for Diawara is one of the only ones that makes absolute sense, because:
Better Stats: Compared head-to-head, the Guinean clearly looks better than Lucas on paper (Source: SofaScore). Be it creativity, defending or even technical ability, both players play in similar positions. However, Lucas Torreira has the same goals and assists in 7 games more than Diawara.
Lower Age: A younger player has two perks – higher resale value and more years to play. While the Uruguayan is 24, the Guinean is a year younger. A younger player will help Arteta to shape the squad afresh, rather than “Emery” player stuttering with injuries.
Economically Feasible: The exchange looks a certain possibility for the stakes involved. Lucas Torreira wants to leave. With experience already in Italy, Roma looks a great option. While Arsenal expects to get around £25 million for the midfielder without an exchange. AC Milan are already interested. However, the exchange for a younger lad always looks an attractive possibility.
