Arsenal playmaker tops the January window shortlist of top European clubs

Arsenal has yet to sort out their contract issues, but they have not yet tabled a contract extension for German international Mesut Ozil.

Arsenal has had their issues with player contracts with the likes of Jack Wilshere, Aaron Ramsey and of course both Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez among many other players. However, while the Chilean has taken a rather strong stance over his contract, Mesut Ozil has been less insistent.

Ozil celebrates after scoring against Chelsea last season

The German, who just bought a new house in London will be able to sign a pre-contract with a foreign club in January, with his deal expiring in June 2018. However, Arsenal is one of the several options that the 28-year-old could choose from as Mesut Ozil was offered a contract extension in February but rejected it due to the uncertainty over Arsene Wenger’s future.

The former Real Madrid playmaker arrived at Arsenal in 2013 at the end of the summer transfer window. Since then, he’s made more than 160 appearances for the club and has said that he’s happy living in the capital. However, the likes of Barcelona, Manchester United and even Inter Milan are among the clubs that are highly interested in the Arsenal playmaker.

Mesut Ozil has, however, come under a lot of criticism from ex-players and pundits off-late including former Arsenal defender Martin Keown. The Premier League winner with the Gunners said “I think he’s testing Wenger more than any other player has. I think it was Belarus the other week, he didn’t fancy going.

“He didn’t want to go? I think in some departments he’s already left. Psychologically, mentally, he’s already left the football club. Maybe Wenger is now trying to do the best deal he can to get some compensation for him.”

Mesut Ozil and Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid

Manchester United certainly may seem like a worthwhile destination with Jose Mourinho at the helm, and he knows Mesut Ozil well from their time together at Real Madrid. Meanwhile, Barcelona is on the lookout for a brand new star with Neymar’s departure and after being blocked by Liverpool for Philippe Coutinho, the more affordable Ozil is an attractive option.

Author’s take:

Contract negotiations resumed between both Arsenal and Mesut Ozil at the start of the season, but while the German international is certainly a valuable player, and they wouldn’t want to lose him for free. Because despite all his issues with form and consistency Mesut Ozil has been brilliant for Arsenal and would be a difficult player to replace.
