Arsenal are eyeing a summer move for Olympique Lyon striker Moussa Dembele. The 24-year-old forward is currently on loan at Spanish side Atletico Madrid but will return to France at the end of the season.
The Gunners endured one of their worst Premier League campaign in recent history. They are currently lying ninth in the league table with 52 points after 35 games, their lowest ever points tally at this stage of the competition. Their exit from the Europa League by the hands of former manager Unai Emery was the final nail in the coffin. As a result, the club are planning a major squad overhaul this summer.
Despite the tension between the KSE group and fans, the owners will spend big this summer to appease the fans. And they will fully back manager Mikel Arteta in the transfer window.
There are also uncertainties over the future of Arteta at the Emirates. But the club’s hierarchy see him as the right man to take Arsenal forward. And the Spanish coach is already making plans to revamp his squad in the summer.
Arsenal’s interest in Dembele:
The Gunners are long-term admirers of Dembele and were interested in signing him before he joined Atletico Madrid on loan in January. But that loan move has not worked out as the former Celtic striker would have liked.
Dembele has only featured in six games in all competitions under Diego Simeone. He has struggled with injuries and fitness issues and also stiff competition in the attack.
The Los Rojiblancos have an option to make the move permanent for £30 million. But it is unlikely the club will do that given the plethora of talent they have in attack.
And according to The Telegraph, Arsenal are monitoring Dembele’s situation and will look to pounce on any given opportunity. The report suggests that Lyon will lower Dembele’s asking price and he could be made available for £25 million this summer.
Dembele ideal striker for Arsenal?
Arteta have made it clear that he wants to improve in almost every position this summer, with the striker spot a key area to improve. The futures of Eddie Nketiah and Alexandre Lacazette is still unclear. And last week it was reported that the duo will certainly leave the Emirates this summer.
And Dembele is a perfect backup striker for captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Just like Lacazette, Dembele has been a lethal goal-scorer for Lyon in the past. In his two and a half seasons in France, he had 38 goal involvement in just 51 league starts. He is very consistent and reliable in front of goal. He also has experience in English football, playing three seasons for Fulham before moving to Scotland in 2016.
Dembele will also give stiff competition to Aubameyang in the starting line-up. The Gabon striker has not been at his best this season, largely down to how Arsenal have played this season.
If the club are competent enough in the summer, they can easily get £25 million for Dembele by just selling Nketiah and Lacazette. Arsenal should be doing everything to bring Dembele to north London.
