After a poor start to the season, Arsenal have found their feet and are in fine fettle under new manager Unai Emery with Lucas Torriera playing a big part.
Arsenal, after losing their opening two Premier League games, has now put together a run of 21 unbeaten games across all competitions, which includes a 11 game winning streak as well which ended after the 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace. During this period, no man has been more important to the club than 22 year old Uruguayan international Lucas Torreira.
The midfielder has taken absolutely no time in settling in the Premier League and is already a huge fan favourite at the Emirates. His late acrobatic winner against Huddersfield on Saturday will only increase his following among the faithful. Torreira has also been likened to Arsenal great Patrick Vieira. However, it could have all been very different for the former Sampdoria star. Torreira revealed how he nearly joined some other club until the call from Emery convinced him to come to London.
“At the end of my last season at Sampdoria there were lots of teams being talked about. I never imagined coming here to England because it was mainly Italian clubs being mentioned. Before I left for the World cup I got a call from the coach which was a massive surprise for me.
I knew that I had earned it because of all my hard work and everything that I had done. That phone call made me a happy man. It allowed me to relax too because it allowed me to focus all my attention on the national team and the World Cup. I’m so proud to be part of such an important team.”
Torreira has huge potential and he couldn’t have had a better manager than Unai Emery to help him grow and develop into the world class player he is capable of becoming.
