Unai Emery’s Arsenal is keen on luring Paris Saint Germain right back Thomas Meunier to the Emirates Stadium in a bid to snatch the star from Manchester United’s clutches.
Arsenal finished fifth on the Premier League table this season and managed to reach the finals of the Europa League as well. However, a 4-1 loss in the final to local London rivals Chelsea meant that the Gunners will have no chance of playing in the Champions League next season.
Therefore, Arsenal will now join Manchester United in the Europa League as the two are also competing for similar transfer targets. For Arsenal, Spanish star Hector Bellerin is still sidelined and Stephan Lichtsteiner has had a torrid season, and the Gunners are in need of a decent right back to strengthen their back line.
Arsenal will be considering an overhaul in the summer and with the departures, there will also be quite a few arrivals at the club because of the reinforcements that they need. But Emery has identified that Thomas Meunier is the player who is at the top of his transfer wish list and the Spaniard is keen on bringing him to the Emirates in the summer.
Meunier has lost his place in the Paris Saint Germain starting lineup and is desperate for a move away from the Parc Des Princes in the summer. The 27-year-old wants to play regular football and has the chance to do that at with Arsenal at North London.
The Belgian right back is eager to work with his former manager Unai Emery as the pair tasted success together when the 47-year-old was in charge of PSG for two seasons. Meunier has been capped 36 times for Belgium and is quite solid in defense and provides a useful attacking outlet as well.
Another club that is keen on bringing Meunier to the English Premier League is Manchester United and the Red Devils will face stiff competition for the signature of the Paris Saint Germain defender from Arsenal.
Arsenal holds the edge for signing Meunier as Emery has worked with the player in the past. But Manchester United can offer more in terms of transfer fees which could force the Ligue 1 champions to sell the right back to the Old Trafford unit.
