Arsenal Transfer News: The Gunners have completed the signing of USMNT goalkeeper Matt Turner. The New England Revolution player will join Arsenal at the start of next season.
Bernd Leno was the first-choice goalkeeper for Arsenal in the past three seasons. But he has been surpassed by the heroic Aaron Ramsdale in the 2021/22 season.
The German played the first three games of the 2021/22 Premier League campaign as Arsenal had one of the worst starts in their history. Following this, the Arsenal manager decided to make the goalkeeping replacement.
2-0 losses to Chelsea and Brentford and a 5-0 loss to Manchester City meant that Arsenal lost their first three games of the Premier League campaign. Owing to this, Mikel Arteta’s side slumped to the bottom of the Premier League table.
Matt Turner will join Arsenal in the summer
As per Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal have completed the signing of Matt Turner. But the goalkeeper will join the club next summer rather than in January.
The report also suggests that a full agreement has been reached between Arsenal and the MLS side New England Revolution for the transfer. Arsenal will reportedly be paying €7 million, plus €3 million in bonuses for signing the player.
Matt Turner has been playing for the New England Revolution since February 2018. In this time, the goalkeeper has made 108 appearances for the MLS club.
Apart from his club, the 27-year-old is also part of the United States Men’s National Team. He has made 14 appearances for the USMNT to date. He is currently the first-choice goalkeeper but has to compete with Manchester City’s Zack Steffen for his position.
Apart from the New England Revolution, Turner has also represented Jersey Express and Richmond Kickers in his professional career. Owing to his prowess, Matt Turner was also selected in the MLS All-Stars team in August 2021.
The USMNT coach confirmed the transfer following the 1-0 win over El Salvador on Thursday. Gregg Berhalter said, “Matt is headed to Arsenal. It’s just an amazing story and it’s all down to him, his work ethic, his belief in himself, and his never-give-up attitude.”
Was signing Turner a necessity?
It could be argued that it was not a necessity for Arsenal to go and sign a goalkeeper in January. The Gunners already have Aaron Ramsdale who is in top form hence the fans were rather expecting the club to sign a striker.
As per the latest news, Bernd Leno is looking to head out of Arsenal. The 29-year-old isn’t used to being on the bench. Hence, he is looking to move to a club where he could be a regular starter. It is expected that he will leave in the summer transfer window.
