According to the latest reports Arsenal is looking for a replacement to Emiliano Martinez and wants to sign Aston Villa back-up goalkeeper Tom Heaton. Arsenal is in the market to find a new cover for Bernd Leno at the Emirates. Thus the North London based club has identified Aston Villa second choice as a potential target.
The Daily Mail, as quoted by the Daily Star, has reported that the idea to find a new cover for Arsenal’s first-choice goalkeeper came after the club isn’t satisfied with Alex Runarsson’s performance. The Iceland goalkeeper was in turn signed by the Gunners as a replacement to Emiliano Martinez in the summer.
Emiliano Martinez was seen departing Arsenal during the summer even after giving outstanding performances for Arsenal during the last couple of matches of the previous season. Martinez gave complete justification when he was substituted for Bernd Leno while the German was nursing the knee injury.
However, Arsenal couldn’t promise him the regular game time and at the age of 28, the goalkeeper who usually plays as a backup for Leno revealed his desire of playing as number one. Leno’s understudy was allowed to join Aston Villa after the club made several different approaches for the Argentine stopper.
Arsenal realized the mistake of letting Martinez depart
Martinez was seen joining Villa for a fee of £20m and since then has excelled greatly in performance. Meanwhile, arsenal as well as Mikel Arteta might have understood the mistake they made by selling the greatly talented Emiliano Martinez. The sense of regret might have struck the club after the error-filled display of Alex Runaarson in the Carabao Cup defeat to Manchester City.
Runarrson failed to play up to the mark in the Carabao Cup defeat that eventually has raised questions on his goal stopping ability and play as an understudy to Bernd Leno. The German has sustained many injuries in the last campaign and Arsenal in turn has relied on the second fiddle goalkeeper.
Not only the Icelandic has struggled during the cup loss. Moreover, he suggested that there’s is plenty of room for development and more training. Thus Mikel Arteta is reportedly keen to send Runarrson on a four months loan where he could develop himself as a fine shot-stopper for Arsenal.
Thereby Arsenal has stopped by Aston Villa to make a move for outcast Tom Heaton who is currently viewed as a short-term solution for Arsenal. The same sources have reported that Arsenal wants to sign a ready-made goalkeeper who could provide an instant cover to Bernd Leno whenever needed.
Heaton hasn’t featured for around a year for Aston Villa. The 34-year old has lost his place under the manager Dean Smith after he suffered from a knee injury during the year 2019. In case Arsenal would make a move for Heston the 34-year old would be happy to make his first appearance after a year and make a mark of his presence.
Arsenal would be hope for Heaton to secure a spot in England’s squad for the European championship this summer. The English shot-stopper came through the rank at Manchester United but couldn’t play for them. In 2014 he made his first-ever premier league appearance for Burnley.
Mikel Arteta talked about filing for the position
Arteta said that the situation is under assessment and being monitored as to what will happen with the three goalkeeping positions. The decision made in the summer turned out to be different because of the transfer window and secondly due to Emiliano’s situation.
Arteta said the club could assess the situation properly earlier in summer and thus the goalkeeping position would be discussed again in this window. He also confessed that no decision is taken for Runarsson as yet. So in this window, the club will decide about making any move in these positions.
