If there is one word to describe Wenger’s season, it would be unfortunate. The Frenchman has had a pretty disappointing season so far, after slipping from the top of the table to the sixth position right now. Along with it, the manager has also had to deal with tactical failures, players discontentment. Fan dissatisfaction is another problem Wenger has had to deal with as there have been multiple calls for Wenger to leave.
Adding to that is another potential problem for the manager. Ten of his senior squad members are out of contract in 2018. The way things are, a contract renewal looks fairly uncertain for many of his players. Among the ones out of contract, the most important are the cases of Ozil and Sanchez.
The players out of contract:
Going by the list, it is evident that the Gunners will be losing a lot of important players, possibly for free if they do not act swiftly. First, the case to be considered is that of Alexis Sanchez. In the recent weeks, there has been a lot of speculation with regards to the future of Alexis Sanchez. The player’s body language has been suggestive of his unsettled state in London. The player has been the best for Arsenal, after scoring a lot of goals. With a lot of potential suitors, Arsenal might be looking to sell the player for a hefty sum rather than letting him go for free the next season.
The next most important name on the list would be Mesut Ozil, who is one the best Arsenal players in the recent years. The attacking midfield player has been at the heart of every creative move by the team and has led the team to important victories. His link ups with the other forwards have been phenomenal and the German also held the highest number of assists for Arsenal last season. There have been rumours about the player wanting a move back to Real Madrid, where James Rodriguez looks to have fallen out of favour. It needs to be seen what the club decides to do with the German international.
Apart from these two, there are other important squad players in the team who feature in Arsenal’s starting XI regularly. The likes of Ramsey, Chamberlain and Cazorla are a vital part of Arsenal’s attack. Though Cazorla has been injured for this season, he still forms a formidable partnership with Sanchez and Ozil. Among the other players, Arsenal may still decide to sell those players if they want to clear out dead wood and rebuild the squad. There will be a lot of factors at play. The most crucial factor is Arsene Wenger’s position in the club. The manager may or may not be a part of the club. A lot depends on where the club finishes in the Premier League this season.
