AS Roma is now trying to please their new manager Jose Mourinho with a £34m deal with Chelsea. The Italians have been trying to sign a new striker to replace their aging star Edin Dzeko. The former Manchester City striker is now 35 years and he is no longer at his best.
According to Sky Italia, AS Roma has agreed on a deal to sign Tammy Abraham from Chelsea. The Giallorossi are willing to fork out £34m to bring the English international to Serie A this summer. However, the deal is not final yet as Roma are yet to agree upon personal terms with the Chelsea striker.
It will be up to to the Englishman whether he accepts this offer or not. The likes of Atalanta and Arsenal have also expressed interest in him. But Chelsea would prefer to sell him to a foreign club rather than to a Premier League club.
Why Chelsea are selling Abraham?
The Englishman came through the Blues youth ranks. He had his breakthrough year when Frank Lampard was in charge of Chelsea. However, he was unable to cement a place in the starting lineup. Then next season Timo Werner was preferred over him.
Things turned south when Lampard was sacked and Thomas Tuchel was appointed as a manager. Under the German manager, he has only played 230 minutes of football. Out of which he played zero minutes in the Champions League. Although at times he was injured as well.
Overall Tuchel does not really fancy him. Also, Chelsea are in need of cash as they look to sign Romelu Lukaku. They have already sold Tomori and Guehi now Abraham will add more funds needed to balance the books.
Why does AS Roma want to sign Abraham?
Despite his limited game time at Chelsea last season he was their top scorer. He managed to score 12 goals and further provided 6 assists. Even in his breakthrough season, he was again the top scorer for Blues.
In his first season at Chelsea (senior-level), he scored 18 goals and further provided 6 assists in all competitions. Thus it can be concluded that Abraham is indeed a goalscorer. He does possess the qualities of a proper No.9 and it is no wonder that clubs like Arsenal and Atalanta have been linked with him.
However, there are many aspects of his game that he is yet to improve upon. But he is only 24 years old and his best days are yet to come. Perhaps Jose Mourinho does see a player whom he can inturn into a superstar like Didier Drogba.
AS Roma fans will be happy to see that they have managed to agree on the fee for Abraham. However, they might think that the price is a bit too much for him. This is the backdrop of his lack of playing time last season.
While Chelsea fans will have mixed emotions. They would be sad to see a promising academy player leave the club. But at the same, they do realise that his departure will facilitate the arrival of Lukaku. Also, they will be hoping that Chelsea includes a buy-back clause in his sale.
