AS Roma news: Georginio Wijnaldum has revealed what convinced him to join the Serie A side on a loan deal from Paris Saint-Germain.
Wijnaldum had joined PSG last summer after his five-year spell at Liverpool came to end when his contract expired.
However, things did not go to plan for Wijnaldum at the French capital, where he struggled to live up to the expectations.
He has now joined AS Roma on a season-long loan deal from PSG. Roma also have the option to buy him at the end of the loan spell.
AS Roma News: What convinced Wijnaldum to join I Giallorossi?
Wijnaldum has revealed he spoke to Mohamed Salah, Kevin Strootman, and Achraf Hakmi about AS Roma, and that convinced him to join Jose Mourinho’s side.
Both Salah and Strootman are former Roma players, and Wijnaldum has shared a dressing room with both. Wijnaldum played alongside Salah at Liverpool, and he was Strootman’s teammate at both PSV and Netherlands national football team.
Although Hakimi has not played for Roma, he has plied his trade for Serie A side Inter Milan. Hakimi and Wijnaldum were teammates at PSG last season.
“I wanted to come because of the effort the club made to sign me and because I spoke to Salah and Kevin Strootman about the club and the city and I only heard good stories about it,” Wijnaldum told reporters [via Goal].
“I also spoke to Hakimi, even if he played for Inter, he said that Roma is a beautiful club. That convinced me a lot also because I knew the club.
“We played once with Liverpool [at Roma] and the atmosphere was amazing, I knew I’d play for a club with beautiful supporters, it was the only thing that I knew.”
