Leon Bailey has drawn a lot of eyes with his impressive performances for Bayer Leverkusen and Roma are keen to bring him to the Stadio Olimpico.
Barcelona announced the signing of another Brazilian in Malcom which shocked a few. The transfer brought back some memories of Manchester United and Aaron Ramsey episode. Monchi was unimpressed and assured the Roma faithful that a player on par or better than the former Bordeaux forward would come through the door. Reports suggest that Leverkusen’s Leon Bailey is ‘The Chosen One’.
Roma’s answer to Malcom?
Sky Sports Italia have reported that AS Roma might be looking at Leon Bailly. The 20-year-old Jamaican forward has been a target of some top clubs, most notably Chelsea and Arsenal. The report also suggests that the Gialorossi are serious about acquiring his services. Di Francesco has vouched for Monchi’s intentions to bring in a player with a higher ceiling than the Brazilian attacker.
The Jamaican born winger started his professional career with Genk at the age of 15. Bayer Leverkusen paid around €20m for the 2015-16 Belgian ‘Young Footballer of the Year’. The pacy winger is generally deployed on the ring and impressed with his dribbling at Bundesliga. He is also efficient of the left, ghosting past defenders and whipping some delightful crosses. An eighteen goal involvement from the wing for a 20-year-old is a remarkable return.

‘I want to play at the highest level’
The winger is under contract with Leverkusen through summer 2022. Although he has said that the club is “perfect” for him, he is wary of making a long-term commitment.“At this moment, I can’t really say which particular league I want to touch,” Bailey told ESPN FC. “I want to play at the highest level with a team that is going to compete to win trophies. At this moment, there’s a lot been said, but I’m not so focused on that. For me, I just want the best for myself and my family and whatever the future brings, then I’m ready to accept the challenge.”
“For me, it’s more about progress and working hard because when you’re working hard, you’re going to reach those points. So, of course, for me, it gives me a feeling to make me want to work harder to even be recognised by bigger teams, so that’s something that motivates me to want to work harder and push for more.”
Leon Bailey is definitely a player who fits the bill at Roma. Di Francesco’s side are looking for a pacy and a direct young winger which he can offer in abundance. If they play the cards right, they might have a young forward line consisting of Justin Kluivert, Leon Bailey and Cengiz Under. But only time will tell if Bailey was a better option than Malcom.
