Asia Cup 2022: Babar Azam Praised Naseem Shah for His Victory Shot

Asia Cup 2022: Naseem Shah‘s remarkable performance against Afghanistan has been compared by Babar Azam to a famous time in Afghanistan’s cricket history when Javed Miandad stunned India with a last-ball six.

He continued by talking about other elements of the game and the atmosphere in the locker room. Given the former’s recent performances in the tournament, it was expected that Afghanistan and Pakistan’s matchup would be fiercely contested.

But few anticipated that it would result in one of the most thrilling finishes in recent memory. The two teams faced off in Sharjah on Wednesday, with the Afghans losing and being eliminated from the Asia Cup.

While their opponents advanced to the final against Sri Lanka but not without considerable drama. Pakistan sent their opponents in to bat first after winning the toss, and their choice paid off greatly as the bowlers dominated play.

Although wickets were dropping frequently, Ibrahim Zadran’s anchoring performance of 35 from 37 deliveries helped Afghanistan to a respectable, if not stellar, total of 129/6. However, their bowlers proved to be up to the task and successively dealt Pakistan a taste of their own medicine.

The Men in Green first appeared to be out of chances, but Shadab Khan’s innings of 36 off 28 balls, which included three sixes, offered them a ray of hope. Asif Ali’s cameo of 16 runs at a strike rate of 200 also helped to resurrect them in the match. With only one wicket remaining, 11 runs had to be scored off the final over when Naseem Shah managed to bat his way to an unlikely victory.

“The dressing room was a really tense place, to be honest. The team was entering and exiting the locker room. It was excellently finished by Naseem Shah. Mujeeb and Rashid Khan are two of the best bowlers, but Sharjah is notorious for its low scoring,” said Babar Azam according to India Today during the post-match presentation ceremony.

He further added, “All we wanted to do was extend the game. We did a great job with the ball start. We didn’t carry out our batting strategy very well, but Naseem was excellent. At the back of my mind, I have seen Naseem play like this earlier, and I had belief in him. This moment reminds me of Javed Miandad’s six. We would like to continue this momentum and not repeat our mistakes. Every day is a new day, and we would like to take it day by day.”
