Asia Cup 2022 Final: Who could’ve thought that Sri Lanka would go onto win the Asia Cup finals after the defeat against Afghanistan in the opening game. Cricket is a game of uncertainties, and it has been proved right again in the Asia Cup tournament. Sri Lanka entered the tournament as the underrated side with few interesting characters in the team.
While playing against teams like India and Pakistan the chances of Sri Lanka to even qualified for the super four was very bleak. But again, it’s all about working on the basics and weakness of the opponents and lookout for the ways to outclass other teams.
Sri Lanka has go onto win the 6 games consecutively to lift the trophy for sixth time in their history. India remains at the top with 7 Asia Cup trophies in his cabinet. But the match which has changed the perception of Sri Lanka in the tournament was the super four game against India. And onwards it was started looking Sri Lanka had every chance to win the Asia Cup 2022.
While it was Sri Lanka vs Pakistan in the finals of Asia Cup 2022 but Afghanistan was so close to knocked out Pakistan in the tournament. Naseem Shah two sixes not only end the campaign of Afghanistan but also for India in the league.
Asia Cup 2022 Final: Vengeance of Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka entered the finals with high hopes. Sadly, at first it seemed crushed by Pakistan’s pace attack who restricted them to 58 runs for 5 wickets. But the picture was yet to come when Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Wanindu Hasaranga put on the show of redemption. Pakistan was bit relaxed when half of Sri Lanka side went back to the pavilion.
The game turned around once Sri Lanka forged the partnership and set the momentum for a big score. Rajapaksa was in the best form of his life and played one of the greatest innings of his career.
Sri Lanka was 58/5 and they ended their scoreline with 170/6 and moreover team added 112 runs in the last 11 overs of play. But it was not not possible without the unbeaten knock of Rajapaksa who scored 71 runs off 45 balls which featured 6 fours and 3 sixes. Apart from that Wanindu (36) and Chamika (14*) useful contributions helped the team to put on the fighting total at board.
In response, the first over of Pakistan’s innings was another drama when Dilshan gave away 10 extra runs. But once the pressure began to rise, Pakistan crumbled down and lost the wickets at regular intervals. The only major contribution came from Rizwan bat who scored 55 runs.
And Pakistan just managed to score 147 runs in their alloted 20 overs and lost the finals to 23 runs. While in post-match press conference Bhanuka addressed, “Aggression is one word. Yes, we had the aggression tonight and we showed what we can do with our strength. We are in a transition phase, but we have scripted the history for ages.”
He went on to add, “This victory is dedicated to all the people of our country who are undergoing a crisis. We hope our little moments bring smiles to your faces.” The skipper Dasun Shanaka also believes that team performed brilliantly and they deserve a such moment to cheer for.
With the major tournament coming up ahead this victory definitely provide the momentum to our youngsters Dasun said after. The shocking defeat of Pakistan has raised numerous eyebrows. Especially after former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria criticised the captaincy to favouritism in the team towards the selection of players.
Kaneria said it’s all about picking your players on absurd selection with no criteria. And even himself skipper Babbar was poor in the choices as compared to the smart opposition skipper.
