Asia Cup 2022: Former Indian chief selector Kiran More was literally taken aback by veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin’s inclusion in Asia Cup squad.
Ravichandran Ashwin has been away from cricketing action for a long time now. Moreover, he didn’t play most of the games in the last edition of the T20 World Cup.
Meanwhile, Kiran More further added that India should have gone with Mohammed Shami or Axar Patel ahead of Ashwin. Kiran More is of the opinion that Shami is a wicket-taking bowler.
As a result, he wants a seamer like him in the Indian cricket team. Shami has the knack for taking wickets with the new ball. Besides that, he can take wickets in middle and death overs as well.
Kiran More felt that the team management missed out on the trick of picking Shami for the upcoming edition of the Asia Cup. The former selector further added that Ashwin’s IPL record is not that good.
He said someone like Mohammed Shami or Axar Patel would have been a perfect replacement for him in the Asia Cup. The tournament will kick off in UAE from August 27 onwards.
Asia Cup 2022: Kiran More surprised over Ravichandran Ashwin’s selection in Asia Cup squad
While speaking to Star Sports, the former selector added that he was indeed surprised to know that Ravichandran Ashwin was part of the squad for Asia Cup 2022.
“Even I was surprised. How can Ashwin even come in this team? And every time. Even in the last World Cup he was picked in the team, and then did not play. Look at his IPL record, it is not that good,” Kiran More added.
He felt that Mohammed Shami should have been there or Axar Patel. Kiran further added that Axar Patel performed considerably well in the recently-concluded India’s tour of West Indies.
Kiran More also added that Shami is his player and that he will go to the World Cup. He said he wants only wicket-taking bowlers who can deliver the goods for the team when it matters the most.
“I really felt Shami should have taken that role or Axar Patel. And Axar has performed very well. Shami is my player and he will go to the World Cup. I want wicket-taking bowlers. Shami can pick wickets with the new ball, in the middle overs and in the slog overs as well,” Kiran More said.
Team India will kick-start their Asia Cup campaign on August 28 as they will play against their arch-rivals Pakistan at Dubai International Stadium.
