Asia Cup 2022: If I Was Chairman Of Selection Committee, Mohammed Shami Would Have Been In Squad, Says Kris Srikkanth

Asia Cup 2022: Former Indian selector Kris Srikkanth has made a bold statement after the team management decided to exclude Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami for the Asia Cup.

The right-arm fast bowler who is known for his potential to take wickets in crucial situations failed to earn a place in the Indian squad for the upcoming main event.

The experienced pacer brought the best out of himself in the fifteenth edition of the Indian Premier League. He took as many as 21 wickets to his name in the last season of the IPL.

His stellar performances in the IPL helped him earn a place in India’s T20I squad. However, he didn’t earn a place in the squad for the multi-nation tournament.

Meanwhile, former Indian cricketer Kris Srikkanth added that if he was the chairman of the selection committee, then Mohammed Shami would have been in the squad.

Shami has played only 17 T20Is for the Indian cricket team. He didn’t enjoy bowling in this particular format as he accounted for only 18 dismissals. Besides that, he has been pretty much expensive in the tournament.

“But I still believe that Axar Patel was a serious contender in my team. It would have been a big toss-up between Axar Patel and Ashwin,” Srikkanth said on Star Sports’ show ‘Follow The Blues’.

Srikkanth also added that the squad of Team India for Asia Cup is pretty good. However, at the same time, he remarked that India are one pacer short. He was pleased to see his inclusion in the squad.

“I think the squad is pretty good but I think we would need one more medium pacer. We are going with one medium pacer short. Two wrist spinners is fine. I feel bad for Axar Patel, who has missed out. I am very happy for Deepak Hooda – he can bowl a bit, he’s a good hitter and he’s a good striker of the ball,” Srikkanth further added.
