Asia Cup 2022: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the squad for the Asia Cup tournament. Team India will kick-start their campaign on August 28.
Rohit Sharma and Co will lock horns with Babar Azam and Co on that particular date. It is surely going to be a cracker of a contest this time around. The game will kick off at Dubai International Stadium.
The highly-anticipated encounter is less than three weeks away from getting underway. Team India are the record holders of the Asia Cup competition as they have won seven times, more than any other team.
Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma will be leading the team from the front. Notably, Rohit Sharma already led Team India in the Asia Cup in 2018 in Virat Kohli’s absence.
Under his captaincy, Team India won its seventh Asia Cup title. This will be also be the second time that Rohit Sharma will be leading India in Asia Cup.
On the other hand, KL Rahul will serve as Rohit’s deputy for Asia Cup. Meanwhile, former Indian wicketkeeper-batter Saba Karim had something to say about the decision to make KL Rahul as Rohit’s deputy.
Asia Cup 2022: This was the right time for the selectors to get in Hardik Pandya, says Saba Karim
Former Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Saba Karim reckons that maybe it was the right time for the selectors to get in Hardik Pandya as the vice-captain.
Hardik Pandya has already proved his leadership potential in the Indian Premier League. Under his captaincy, Gujarat Titans made it all the way to the final and beat Rajasthan Royals in the final to win their maiden title in their debut season.
After that, Hardik Pandya led Team India in the two-match T20I series against Ireland. India won both the T20Is under his captaincy. Hardik Pandya also led India in the fifth and final T20I against West Indies.
India beat West Indies by 88 runs in the final game in Florida. On the other hand, KL Rahul hasn’t achieved much what Hardik Pandya did as a captain so far.
“A very strong case from Hardik Pandya, as you rightly said. I don’t think the selectors put too much thought into picking the vice-captain. They are going ahead with KL Rahul because he has led India in the past whenever Rohit Sharma or Virat Kohli have been injured,” Saba Karim added.
“I believe if they had put some more thought behind this, maybe a more spunkier character like Hardik would have been given a go-ahead because he brings a different kind of mentality to the side,” Karim told Sports18 news channel.
