Atlético Madrid reveal their new stadium and new logo

Atlético Madrid’s new home to be named Wanda Metropolitano stadium as it will be sponsored by the Chinese property company Dalian Wanda Group.

On Friday, the club revealed their new home stadium and also the new logo. From 2017, Atlético Madrid will play their home matches in Wanda Metropolitano as confirmed by the club president Enrique Cerezo.

Atlético played at the Estadio Metropolitano from 1923 to 1966. They moved to Vicente Calderón in the south of the city in 1966. Most of all, new ground’s name is also in reference to where they played their first La Liga games.

The club president Enrique Cerezo in a press conference said “I am honoured to say we have reached an agreement with Wanda to name our new stadium. They are the best partners on our journey to keep working for a better future.”

Wanda, a Chinese group has had ties with Atlético since January 2015 when 20% of the club’s shares were acquired by them. Furthermore, they are the sponsors of Atleti’s training ground since 2015. The new deal was signed by club’s chief executive Miguel Ángel Gil Marín in China on Friday.

“We are very excited by this deal. Atlético and Wanda are growing global brands that want to keep growing and reach even more places,” Gil Marín said. “Wanda is a strategic partner and our change in stadium is not an isolated event. It’s a step forward to the future.”

In addition to this, club revealed brand new crest in an event held at the Vicente Calderon stadium. In addition to that, club captain Gabi said “I like the badge because it’s true to our history. Being the first ones to wear it continues to make us be a part of this team’s great history.”

While speaking at the presentation, Atlético Madrid striker Fernando Torres said: “I know from my grandfather about the Metropolitano, it is a beautiful surname. For those with Atleti blood, the surname is emotional. I can tell my grandfather I played at the Metropolitano.”
