Arsenal striker Pierre Emrick Aubameyang has been out of form this season. The 31-year-old forward who made 98 appearances for Arsenal netted 57 goals and 13 assists. Under Mikel Arteta’s guidance, Aubameyang won FA Cup and Community Shield along with his teammates last season.
Despite being linked to Barcelona, Aubameyang made up his mind to stay at Arsenal. Ever since signing the contract, he was never the same as he was on the field. He started losing confidence and so were his teammates. Arsenal finds themselves in troubled waters in the ongoing season of the Premier League.
Having made 13 appearances this season, Aubameyang scored 3 goals and assisted just once. This is indeed a poor stat considering a player of his stature. The forward was involved in 7 defeats in the ongoing season.
The striker also missed the team’s Carabao Cup tie against Manchester City due to a minor injury. The former Borussia Dortmund forward is still recovering from a calf injury. He also did not play against Everton at Goodison Park, which his team lost the game by 2-1.
Meanwhile, Arteta confirmed that Aubameyang is feeling much better. The striker is scheduled to have further scans this week. According to the manager, the Gabonese international is trying his best to be fit as soon as possible.
Aubameyang should give up Arsenal captaincy: Andy Townsend
Arsenal who are placed 15th in the points table are just 4 points above the relegation zone. Aubameyang is also in a poor run of form this season. He scored just 5 goals across all competitions this season.
Meanwhile, Andy Townsend reckons Aubameyang should give up captaincy in a bid to restore his best form. The forward scored just one goal in the Premier League from open play since signing the contract.
Townsend, who starred represented The Blues and Aston Villa in his career, believes the only way Aubameyang should lead is by burying the balls in the back of the net.
Speaking to talkSPORT Breakfast, the former Chelsea player said the 31-year-old striker lost his form after he became a captain. “Since they gave him his deal since he’s become captain, he looks like a different man. “
“He got his goal against Southampton; I watched him score that goal and I like to see him in a position where you’ve got a chance to get a goal,” he added in a statement.
I don’t get why Aubameyang is drifting out wide: Townsend
Upon noticing the gameplay closely, Aubameyang is often playing out wide and is giving loads of crosses for other players. “All this stuff where he’s drifting out wide and he’s crossing balls for others, I don’t get that,” Andy Townsend added.
Aubameyang was in scintillating form last season when he scored goals with ease. He netted 29 goals in 44 games as Arsenal won a record 14th FA Cup last season. He also scored 2 goals (1 in open play, 1 in the penalty shoot-out) against Liverpool in the Community Shield.
