The 2021 Ballon d’Or Awards have been concluded and the main news out of it is that Lionel Messi has secured his seventh career Ballon D’or award. Polish striker Robert Lewandowski finished second. In this article, we take a look at all the different awards and standings of the event including the female Ballon D’or, Yashin Trophy, striker of the year. Moreover, we also take a look at the Kopa trophy.
Ballon d’Or 2021- Lionel Messi
It is finally done. Lionel Messi has cemented his place in history with a historic SEVENTH Ballon D’or award. The superman from Argentine was the favorite this season especially after the Copa America win.
However, there was still some doubt especially with the Polish sensation Robert Lewandowski behind him. Chelsea midfielder Jorginho finished third whereas Cristiano Ronaldo was at sixth position.
“It’s incredible to be here again. Two years ago I thought it was the last time. Winning the Copa America was key,” Messi said at Paris’s Theatre du Chatelet. “It is a special year for me with this Copa America title. It meant a lot to win at the Maracana stadium and I was so happy to celebrate with the people from Argentina.”
Club of the Year – Chelsea
No surprises here as Premier League club Chelsea secured the Club of the Year award. The London Blues won this season’s UEFA Champions League after defeating Manchester City in the final. Moreover, they also registered victory in the UEFA Super Cup and will be competing in the Club World Cup soon. Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea are well-deserved winners here. Additionally, the women’s team under Emma Hayes was utterly dominant as well.
Striker of the Year- Robert Lewandowski
It is always tough when you are going up against Lionel Messi for the Ballon d’Or. However this year there was a substantial chance for Robert Lewandowski to take home the award after scoring a remarkable 41 goals in 29 Bundesliga games.
Although he finished second, Lionel Messi was quick to point out that last season no-one deserved the award more than him and that France football should award the Ballon D’or 2020 to Robert Lewandowski.
“I’d like to mention Robert, it’s been a real honour to compete with him,” Messi said. “You deserve your Ballon d’Or. Last year everyone agreed that you were the winner. I think France Football should give you your Ballon d’Or so you can have it like you deserve. Hopefully, France Football can give it to you to have in your home, because you were the true winner if it weren’t for the pandemic. You should have one in your house too.”
Yashin Trophy – Gianluigi Donnarumma
Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma won the Yashin Trophy for 2021. He was the standout player at the UEFA Euros this season and helped Italy in winning the tournament after a spectacular display in the finals. Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy finished second even though he won the UEFA Champions League. Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak finished third respectively.
Women’s Ballon d’Or – Alexia Putellas
No surprises here again as Barcelona Femini’s Alexia Putellas won the Ballon D’or for women’s. She has been absolutely stunning in the past year for her club enabling them to win everything from the Champions League to the League and Copa de la Reina.
Alexia Putellas has also secured the UEFA Women’s Footballer of the Year award. She was shortlisted with four either Barcelona players namely Lieke Martens, Jennifer Hermoso, Sandra Paños, and Irene Paredes.
Kopa Trophy – Pedri
The final award that we are covering is the Ballon D’or for youngsters under the age of 21. Barcelona’s Pedri won the Kopa Trophy beating the likes of Jude Bellingham of Borussia Dortmund. Midfielder Pedri has already matured into a prolific player for Barcelona’s first team and was also a part of the UEFA Euro Team of the Season. He also participated for Spain in the Olympics in Japan.
