Ernesto Valverde has reportedly identified a perfect alternative to Philippe Coutinho and it’s fellow Premier League and Manchester City star, Bernardo Silva.
FC Barcelona and Ernesto Valverde have reportedly identified Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva as an ideal alternative to Philippe Coutinho. While Barcelona has been admirers of the Liverpool player for quite some time now and was beyond desperate to try to bring him to Camp Nou after the departure of his fellow countryman Neymar. However, with Jurgen Klopp strong stance on not selling him, the Catalans have shifted their sights to the 23-year-old.
With the departure of Neymar, who was touted as the crown prince to take over Lionel Messi’s throne at the Nou Camp, Barcelona is on the lookout for a player who can take over the reigns when Messi decides to call it a day. While they did spend over a €100 million on Ousmane Dembele in the summer as the replacement, the Frenchman has missed out the majority of the current season after suffering an injury in his third game.
According to Diario Gol, the club has identified Portuguese international Bernardo Silva as the player who fits the bill perfectly after their failed attempts to try and lure Coutinho away from Anfield.
However, after a stellar performance in both the Euros and with Monaco last season, Bernardo Silva earned plaudits for his performances. That’s probably why, combined with his eight goals and eleven assists in the Ligue 1 last season, saw Manchester City and Pep Guardiola come calling.
Nonetheless, Bernardo Silva has found it hard to break into Pep Guardiola’s City side that boasts of some of the best-attacking players in world football right now. With Kevin De Bruyne, David Silva, Raheem Sterling, and Leroy Sane in scintillating form, Silva has been restricted to a mere 7 starts in all competitions for the club this season.
With the shift in power in Europe due to the rise of Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City, it is important for a club of Barcelona’s stature to try and continue to stay at the top and it will be in their best interest to attract the best players from all around the world. Therefore signing Bernardo Silva makes sense, he’s also a player who fits their style of play under Valverde.
