Samuel Umtiti was thought to become a big shot at the Camp Nou following his arrival back in 2016. Barcelona was in search of a left-footed central defender and Umtiti was the best option at the time. Umtiti did indeed stand up to Barcelona’s expectations whenever his fitness was at its peak.
Recent years have been troublesome for the World Cup winner. Haunted by injury concerns, it leaves the Frenchman out of Barca’s lineup. And with the arrival of Clement Lenglet, Barcelona have a fully fit left-foot CB in hand. Thus, Umtiti’s future at the Camp Nou has been under speculation lately.
The Frenchman was under the radar of several European clubs this window. As clubs were in search of quality defenders this summer who they were hoping to swoop for a reasonable fee. Premier League was thought to be his most likely destination considering the interests of London.
Manchester United, Arsenal, Leicester City, and West Ham were the top contenders. The PL sides have been reported to have had a genuine interest in the Frenchman. With his position at Catalonia sinking, Umtiti was thought to make a jump in the next transfer window. But it seems like the defender has certain other plans.
Umtiti wants to stay at Barcelona.
Despite totaling just 77 apps for Barca in LaLiga since joining in 2016. Umtiti is still confident that he has a better future at Camp Nou. Even with interest from the Premier League, interest from Lyon was the most catchy. considering his present situation, the best call for him was to return to his former club.
“I don’t see myself at any club other than Barca, I’ve been pretty clear about that with everyone.Samuel Umtiti told Canal Plus.
Where he could settle a bit and earn more playing time after a really troubling career. But Umtiti was quick to turn down the opportunity and stick with Barcelona. Arsenal was also a very likely location for the Frenchman. Mikel Arteta was in dire need of a solid defense during the summer window. Samuel was on Arteta’s radar, but he ultimately pens down a deal with Gabriel Magalhaes.
If not for his continued injury troubles the 26-year-old will have established himself at Barca. He still has time to make up for the lost time and hopes to do so by choosing to stay in Barcelona. But his plans may hinder as the Spanish giants look to cut short their wage bill soon. And Umtiti seems surplus to the Catalans at the moment.
Arsenal and Lyon are still open to considering signing the Frenchman. if he has to leave Barcelona, Umtiti can choose between the clubs to make a restart to his career.
Barcelona may want him out.
Though Umtiti is keen to redeem himself at Camp Nou, the present situation in Barcelona may be against him. Josep Bartomeu is hoping to trash as many players as possible to level the club’s finances. And Umtiti has not been an integral part of the Catalan squad.
Umtiti does have a contract that runs until June 2023. But Barca may possibly pounce on the chance to scrub off some excess wage bills. Ronald Koeman has also not been too keen on Samuel Umtiti. Hence, his future at Barcelona seems to be nearing an end despite Umtiti wanting to stay.
But, things may take a shift soon in favor of Umtiti, as FC Barcelona is likely to get a change in their board. Things may take a new tide and stars like Umtiti might fin redemption.
