Barcelona agree terms with La Liga starlet

The Blaugrana are reportedly on the verge of signing Real Betis ace Fabian Ruiz, despite serious interest from the Premier League.

The Catalans are closing in on a deal for the Spanish sensation as per Don Balon. Ruiz is one of the breakthrough stars in the Primera Division this term. The youngster has attracted interest from England, but Barcelona have acted quickly by agreeing to terms with Betis. The youngster has 2 goals and 3 assists to his name already, in just 16 appearances.

Hailing from Betis’ youth academy, Ruiz has impressed massively with Los Verdiblancos so far this season. Barcelona have been touted to be keeping tabs on him, as he is seen by many, as the heir to Andres Iniesta. The veteran is in his early 30’s and will need to be replaced soon enough.

Ernesto Valverde is believed to be an admirer of the 21-year-old midfielder, who started in Betis’ recent loss to Barcelona. Even though the manager has been coy to speculate on Ruiz’s future, he seems to have sanctioned the signing of the Spaniard. If the deal does go through, Ruiz will become Barcelona’s third signing of the January transfer window.

Philippe Coutinho and Yerry Mina have joined the Catalans in recent weeks, as they hope to build on their lead in the La Liga. Fabian has a buyout clause as low as  £14 million, which is a decent sum in today’s inflated market. The Blaugrana are believed to have reached an agreement in principle with Ruiz’s parent club.

He will stay with Betis for at least one more season and later switch to the Camp Nou. The reports also suggest that Barcelona’s technical secretary Robert Fernandez is hell bent to land the Spaniard before other clubs do. However, whether Ruiz can fill in at Iniesta’s boots remains to be seen.

Author’s Take

The versatile midfielder should be a good addition to Ernesto Valverde’s side. Having impressed at Betis, he will obviously need time to adjust at the Camp Nou. Hence comparisons with Iniesta should not be made immediately as it will not help the 21-year old’s development.
